"Newchang" transit (Oct 3) and reverse showing Russian P.O. in China 'Kitai' 10 k. blue in a vertical strip of three all tied by "YINKOW (Newchang) FIELD POST OFFICE" cds's in black (Tchilinghirian fig. 655) also tying the Cyrillic registration label of same below. Superb strike of Chinese Eastern Railway "POSTAL WAGON No. 262 / 7" cds (Sept 22j) in black (Tchilinghirian fig. 658) and red oval London registered transit (Oct 23). A fine and rare cover that opens well for Exhibit display.

1834 (Aug 11): Entire letter from Berbice to Belfast endorsed "Packet" at base, twice readdressed initially to Cheltenham and then to London; with "BERBICE / August 11, 1834" handstamp on reverse and "DEMERARA" fleuron transit, both in black. On arrival manuscript "Redirected at" in front of "BELFAST" straight line in black on obverse, thence to Cheltenham with cds in black (Oct 15) and again forwarded to London (Oct 16) with an eventual total of "5/3d." to pay in manuscript. A fine and unusual entire with full transcript. Note: Lengthy letter, including a report on the large purchases of Negro slaves for the estate (rather sadly 139 slaves from 11 years old upwards), costing an average of £29 each, with a comment "2 or 3 mulatto women and children, useless". Later remarks on the state of unrest amongst the slaves and how several plantations were experiencing strikes.

III 5 A/B) with good even margins all round, used on 1854 single rate cover to Dublin, Ireland endorsed "per first mail Steamer to England", cancelled by CGH obliterator in black (4 d. internal + 4 d. port fee). Reverse with oval framed GRAHAMSTOWN despatch datestamp in red (Feb 14) and Cape Town cds (Feb 18), carried on "R.M.S. Hydaspes" of the General Screw Shipping Co. with London cds and Dublin arrival (April 22) cds in red on reverse and charged "1/-" due to pay. Slight soiling but an attractive cover. Provenance: Collection Sir Henry Tucker, Harmers, London, 20 Nov 1979, lot 32; collection R. Johnson and Dr. Guy Dillaway.

1859/60: Covers (2) to Portarlington, Ireland with 1859 cover franked by 1853 Perkins Bacon 1 d. red-brown on blued paper in a pair, originally applied around edge of the cover, and oxidised 4 d. deep blue each tied by oval "FORT BEAUFORT" datestamps (July 7) - an extremely rare usage of the datestamp, introduced as a despatch or arrival marking to be applied generally on the reverse - and a second 1860 cover from the same correspondence with 1856/66 6 d. rose-lilac with good to poor margins correctly tied by CGH obliterator and by "Devonport Packet" cds; both with "5" (pence) credit in red crayon. Despite faults, a scarce pair of covers.
