SELDOM ENCOUNTERED IN SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION WITH MARGINS ON ALL SIDES. The presses used to print the Embossed issue allowed for only one impression to be printed at a time. This resulted in small (or non-existent) and irregular spacing between stamps. They were cut apart with scissors, often carelessly, resulting in the vast majority having little or no margins on one or more sides. To find a stamp containing four margins, full original gum, crisp embossing, and from the scarcer Die 2 - is quite remarkable. With clear 1996 E. Diena certificate. Scott $22,500. SG £16,000

notorious for having tight margins between stamps. An original-gum

presumed to be "Stamping Department" from Somerset House. We feel
this could have been done on the top sheet of a stack of sheets
indicating a check of approval. With 1991 R.P.S. and 1997 Raybaudi

BROWN. A NOTORIOUSLY DIFFICULT ORIGINAL-GUM STAMP TO ACQUIRE --
PARTICULARLY THIS FRESH. In 1879 the Universal Postal Union
recommended establishing an international color standard for stamps
in the basic UPU rates. This required changing the 2½p to Blue, but
that conflicted with the then-current 2sh color. Brown was selected
as the replacement color, and De La Rue printed a new batch of
stamps which were released in Feb. 1880. The stamps were withdrawn
on July 16, 1880, creating a period of about six months when these
stamps were on sale. The short-lived sale period of the 2sh Brown
explains its rarity, particularly in unused condition. Ex Rietz.
