1901 incoming cover from Denmark to Gotthard Christensen of the
Scandinavian Corps, with a 4 and two 8 Ore cancelled Nakskov FE 01.
The cover was censored on arrival in St Helena. The Scandinavian
Corps was formed in Pretoria on 12 October 1899, the day after war
was declared. Officers and NCO’s of the various Scandinavian
nationals were elected and Christensen was elected Sergeant of the
Danish Troop. He, along with 47 members of the Scandinavian Corps,
was captured at Paardeberg with General Cronje on 27 February 1900.

MAIL CAPTURED BY THE GERMANS. 1916 censored cover from Kobenhaven
11.12.16 to Manchester that was on the Danish ship S S VIDAR that
was intercepted during the night of 2/13 December 1916 and taken
into Swinemude by the German navy. She was on her way from
Copenhagen to Hull at the time of her interception carrying a cargo
of agricultural products and mail. The ship was released on 15
January 1917. The cover was censored by both the Germans and the
British and has had a small explanatory label affixed ‘Part of a
Mail captured / by the Germans and / delayed’. An uncommon
incident.
