“WATER WITCH” 1854. The 134 ton schooner Water Witch left Melbourne
on 15th September for Mauritius, but was caught in a gale in the
Bass Strait. The vessel had 26 crew and passengers on board. The
Water Witch was eventually driven ashore, on King Island's western
coast. All onboard reached the shore where they later discovered
survivors of the Brahmin, a wooden three mast ship that had struck
a reef and was wrecked three kilometres south of Whistler Point, on
the west coast of King Island, that had had departed London on 5
February 1854, with 42 passengers and crew. The survivors of the
Water Witch and Brahmin, together with the former's cargo of
specie, were brought to Melbourne on 25 October. This letter was
returned to Melbourne and remailed on 26th January 1855. A red
crayon 1/- ship rate and red m/s “Detained for 2/- postage” are on
the front of the letter which arrived in Mauritius on March 14th. A
rare item ,only three covers are recorded from this wreck, of which
this is the finest. Ex Woolfe and Gwynn

S.S. COMORIN On the 19th February 1930, the P & O steamer ‘Comorin’
left Sydney, Australia, bound for England. On the night of the 12th
of March, as she was about to sail from Colombo, Ceylon, a fire
broke out in number three hold. Seawater was used to flood the hold
to extinguish the fire, which was only accomplished on the 14th
March. The mail was damaged by being wet by water. The ‘Comorin’
eventually sailed on the 17th March, but on the 3rd April, the day
after arriving at London, the Postmaster General announced that all
the mail had to be dried before being delivered, and that there
might be a considerable delay in consequence. At least 12 different
types of hand stamps were used for this salvaged mail, and cachets
were in both black and purple inks. This cover, which has had the
stamp washed off, has a two line cachet applied to both the front
and back of the cover. It is a variant on Hoggarth & Gwynn Type 2
cachet but has no stops after ‘S S’ Fine and very uncommon,
possibly unique

1935 TENNANT CREEK, AUSTRALIA. On the morning of September 6th the
Australian Transcontinental Airways Monospar took off from Tennant
Creek, Northern Territory ferrying the passengers from VH- UXX
“Faith in Australia”, which had suffered engine failure near Daly
Waters. At 0825, the starboard engine began to miss badly. Five
minutes later it dropped all its revolutions and the machine lost
height rapidly. The pilot immediately made for the clearest piece
of ground, but on landing the port wing hit a bush and crashed.
Nobody was hurt. Very few covers have been recorded from this
incident. This cover was signed by the pilot M.V. Mather, and is
illustrated by Sanford. A rare cover, few known from this incident
and very few signed by the pilot
