While on a first flight between Mexico and Cuba on 21st January 1931, the Aero Mexico flight took off from Progreso, Mexico, and after ten minutes in the air, storms and overheating engines forced the pilot to land on the water in the Gulf of Mexico. Waves broke the hull and a great deal of the mail was damaged by water. The mail was recovered in water soaked condition. A special label was affixed to most covers, from which the stamps were soaked off, and to some of the other water soaked covers. An uncommon air crash cover
