FINANCE” On the morning of 26 November 1908, the steamer Finance of
the Panama Railroad Steamship Company line was hit by the steamer
“Georgic” of the White Star line off Sandy Hook in New York Harbour
and sank shortly after. The Finance had been due to sail from New
York on November 23 but had been delayed by dense fog for three
days. Three passengers and 1 crewman drowned in the incident. All
the mail on board was destined for Central America – mainly Panama
and Colon. There are two different labels and a straight line
handstamp that were applied to recovered mails. This cover posted
at HUDSON TERM. STA. NOV 17 1908, addressed to Panama City, Panama,
has the label attached to the back of the cover. A 10 DEC canceller
ties the label

1883 4d dull green tied by a very fine strike of the PANAMA DE 29
86 ‘C35’ barred duplex canceller. A London JA 22 87 arrival cancel
is on the back of the cover. HMS Caroline was a satellite class
composite screw sloop of the Royal Navy and launched on 25 November
1882. She was later reclassified as a corvette. A scarce stamp on
cover, rare used from Panama

1919 PANAMA?. 1919 cover from Trinidad to Australia posted DE 3 19
and endorsed ‘card’ that arrived in Sydney on February 24th 1920.
On the back of the cover is a two line cachet ‘DEMAGED BY FIRE IN /
CHI & CBL, FS TR7.19..’ The second line is inverted !! The route
from Trinidad to Australia would have been via Panama and one can
only assume that this is where the incident happened. The Panama
Canal Zone and the railway were American which would explain the
similarity to American train incident cachets. As this is the only
cover known from this incident, further details are sketchy, but
considering the time taken for the cover to arrive in Australia (83
days) the incident must have been quite serious
