DAMAGED BY WATER. 1951 envelope from St. Louis to Chicago with a
cancellation of FEB 6 1951. A violet two line cachet 'Mail damaged
by water / Postage Paid' has been applied to the front of the
cover. In late January and early February 1951 there was a very
severe ice storm that left thousands of square miles under nearly a
foot of ice. When this started to melt there would have been
localised flooding and presumably that is what occurred to damage
this envelope. An uncommon item and the only such one that I have
recorded during this period to date

1945 FLOOD MAIL. A cover and original contents en-route from CAMP

flooding at Orange and Riverside Texas and badly damaged. Heavy
rain in Texas in April caused extensive flooding and damage. A
scarce cover from this 1945 flooding

QUETTA EARTHQUAKE. 1935 cover to England endorsed ‘Air Mail’ and
‘No Stamps Available’ that has a fine strike of the straight line
‘QUETTA EARTH QUAKE POSTAGE FREE’ cachet. A triangular ‘I.S.’ h/s
is on the front of the cover, on the back is a poor QUETTA 13 JU 35
cancel. The earthquake, measuring 7.7 on the Richter Scale struck
at just after 3 a.m. on 31st May levelling the town and surrounding
area to the ground, killing between 30,000 and 60,000 people. For a
few weeks after all postal items sent from there went free of
charge. A very fine example of mail from this disaster

unstamped with a SAN FRANCISCO APR 25 1906 cancel on the front. A
Cleveland APR 29 06 arrival c.d.s. is on the back. The earthquake
struck at 5.12 a.m. on April 18. Up to 3000 people were killed and
80% of the City destroyed. From 18th April to 26th April mail could
be sent free of charge if posted within the City. A fine example of
this free post, the cover being sent the day before the free post
ended. Accompanying the cover is a post card showing the fire that
devastated the city

sailed from Melbourne on January 28 with 10,156 oz of gold on board
(£50,000) and 15 boxes of mail. On 23 February she put into King
George's Sound with engine trouble. The gold, passengers and the
mail were transferred to the 'European' which sailed from King
George's Sound on 21 March and arrived at Suez on 19 April. The
total journey took 98 days, well beyond the normal 65 – 70 days
this trip should have taken

1896 U.S.A. STAGECOACH DISASTER. On November 16 1896, due to a
landslide that blocked the road 6 miles north of Laytonville,
Mendocino County, Ca. the stage driver was forced to cross Ten Mile
Creek twice to avoid the blockage. The first crossing was made
safely, but on the second, while attempting to regain the proper
side of the river, the stagecoach overturned. The creek was in
flood and the strong current swept the coach away, killing both the
driver and two horses. An explanatory label was affixed to the
recovered mail which was found four days later. A very scarce
incident, only four covers having been recorded
