1896 (15 Nov) "2½" on 1a6p sepia, type 6 surcharge, showing variety
Roman "I" in fraction "½", large part o.g. One slightly shortish
perf and an insignificant bend mentioned for accuracy, still fine
and very rare, with few examples recorded and only 16 panes
surcharged. Ex Griffith-Jones (Spink 24 Oct 2018, lot 189). [The
overprint has small second "z", but is not readily plateable. The
fact that the Royal Collection includes two examples of the
"Inverted 1" respectively in a block and strip of 3 se-tenant with
SG 31 indicates that the surcharge setting used for SG 29/31 was
not identical to that used for SG 26/8.]

as a horizontal pair (2a rejoined) with individual fine to very
fine large part or complete strikes of type Z6 "ZANZIBAR / REG"
cds. Tiny traces of toning, and one 9p with small tear, still
attractive and scarce multiples. (cat £452)

R7/2, June 1896 printing, fine large part o.g. A lovely example of
this rarity, and well above average. We have recorded about 12
unused examples. BPA cert (1987)

1876 India 6a, 1882-90 ½a (horiz pair), 9p, 1a, 1a6p, 2a (vert
pair), 4a, and 1892-95 2a6p (pair, on official piece), with part to
full strikes of type Z7 cds. Odd imperfections (toning, 1a rounded
corner), still a very good group. Very scarce. (cat £732)

1895-96 1a plum, type 1 opt on India, horizontal pair, the right
stamp error "Zanibar" from R7/2, June 1896 printing, fresh o.g. Odd
shortish perfs, still a very attractive example of this rarity. One
of only about 10 unused examples recorded by us, one of which is in
the Royal collection and two others have faults. Signed Pemberton.

1895-96 6a pale brown, type 1 opt on India, error "Zanibar", from
R7/2, June 1896 setting, neatly cancelled by large part "12 JL 96"
registered cds. Off-centre as often and a couple of shortish perfs
but very rare in used condition, being one of only four such
examples known to us (one of which is thinned). Signed Houtzamer.
RPS cert 34,676 (not present). Ex Arnhold (SGA 17 May 2012, lot
1235) and Sturton (Harmers 8 Nov 2005, lot 1269). (cat £1500)

1895-96 ½a blue-green, type 1 opt on India, horizontal pair, the
right stamp showing the remarkable variety Diaeresis over last 'a'
resulting from the erroneous use of a German modified 'a' instead
of the normal letter, fresh and fine, large part o.g. From R10/5 of
a small late printing from Setting 3. Fascinating and very rare,
with few examples recorded. BPA cert (2024). [The existence of such
a German letter in the 'Zanzibar Gazette' printing office reflects
the cosmopolitan character of the town, with English, French,
German, Arabic and Gujrati all in regular use.]
