Russian P.O. in Alexandria 1863 (Dec 12): Entire letter from Aleppo
via Alexandria to Marseille, struck in transit by “PORT
ALEKSANDRIA” cds in blue (Tchilinghirian fig 256) with ornamental
framed „P.P.“ of Alexandretta (Tchilinghirian unrecorded) in blue
alongside. The entire was transferred to the French P.O. in
Alexandria, there struck by “ALEXANDRIE EGYPTE” cds in black (Dec
24) and reached Marseille with a British vessel, part strike of
“PAQ. ANG MARSEILLE” cds in red (Jan 7, 64). The Russian
pre-payment was not accepted, and the letter charged with ‘10’
décimes. An exceptional combination cover from Syria using for its
journey Russian and British Shipmail services mediated by the
French P.O. in Alexandria. Most interesting, fine and attractive,
signed Sorani, cert. Buchsbayew (2024). Provenance: Pavlovsk

Great Britain 1872 ½ d, rose, plate 14, perforations mainly fine,
used locally within London, dated 27 December 1873, tied by LONDON
CHARING CROSS “21” duplex (FE 27 73), addressed locally to Guilford
Lawn. Card originally issued in New Brunswick, with printed message
of the Fairville Church Mission (Carleton, St. John, Nov. 1873).
The card carried to England and re-used there, uprated by GB ½ d.
There is a central vertical crease well clear of the adhesive
(pulled perforation at base) and imprint. A remarkable and highly
unusual “contrary to regulations” usage of a Canadian postal card,
made valid in Britain by the addition of a GB ½ d, is exceptionally
unusual. Rare and exhibition-worthy.

Dowager 1.5mm surcharge on combination cover, franked on front with
Large Figures Narrow surcharges on Dowager 3rd printing, 2c on 2ca,
5c on 5ca, 10c on 12ca, and Large Figures surcharges on Red
Revenue, 1c on 3c red (Chan 76, 78, 80, 87. Scott 67, 69, 71, 78),
with two examples of 2c on 2ca, cancelled by Tientsin pakua,
matching “Tientsin” origin and brown “Shanghai” transit (30.7, on
reverse) dollar daters, in combination with overlapping France
“Chine” 50c, cancelled by “SHANG-HAI/CHINE” c.d.s. (30.7), showing
“R” unframed handstamp in red (China PO) and handstruck framed “R”
in black adjacent (French PO), with “LIGNE N/PAQ. FR. No. 4”
octagonal datestamp (31.7) and “SERAING” arrival c.d.s. (4.9) on
reverse, address scratched out, Fine to Very Fine, and the earliest
recorded use of the 1.5mm. surcharge on cover.
Experts and Consultants certificate (2008), which states that the 10c on 12ca is the “Empress Dowager Second Printing Surch. with large figures, wide spacing, 10c. on 12Cds. pale orange yellow”.
