Overland via Southampton 1856 (Jan 23): Registered cover from
Bombala, New South Wales to Wymondham, England bearing 1855 New
South Wales Diadem 6 d. grey, margins close to huge, tied by “40”
barred numeral obliterator of Bombala and also tied by “REGISTERED
/ BOMBALA” handstamp in black, prepaying the 6 d. Registration Fee
only, whilst the ½ ounce ship letter rate remained unpaid.
Handstruck “d6” applied in black to be paid by the recipient. A
delightful cover in outstanding quality. Note: From the 1 January
1857 postage had to be compulsorily prepaid and the sender of this
letter on the 27 December 1856 took advantage of this position four
days before enactment. Thus, the 6 d. adhesive prepaid the 6 d.
registration fee, not the ship letter rate. With the letter
arriving in England unpaid, the debit of 6 d. (d6) to the British
Post Office was required to account for the shortfall. Route - The
European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Sydney 23 Jan 1857
per “Oneida” via Melbourne (15 Feb) and King Georges Sound (22
Feb). The ship broke down 400 miles west of Cape Leuwin, Western
Australia and returned to King Georges Sound and was unable to
continue. The Mails were transferred. Departed King Georges Sound
(21 March) per “European” via Galle (4 April) to Suez; overland to
Alexandria; “Etna” (25 April) via Malta (29 April) to Southampton
(8 May); by rail via London to Wymondham, arriving 10 May 1857 (114
days). Note: This was the first homeward voyage of the European and
Australian Royal Mail Co. to England and was a complete financial
disaster. The Company lost the entire subsidy for this voyage and
did not have a ship available for the May mail from Australia.
Incidents such as this plagued the Company throughout their
contract, ending with insolvency in 1858. Provenance: Collection

margins and each touched at top; prepaying 1 s. comprising 6 d. for
a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to England plus 6 d. Supplementary Mail fee
levied after the closure of the mails from Sydney to Melbourne.
Endorsed “Per “Great Britain” via Melbourne” at upper left and
superb strikes of the transit datestamps, side flaps missing and
ironed vertical filing fold, otherwise fine and most appealing -
and a most unusual usage of two differing shades of the 6 d. value
on the same cover. Route - Private steamship: Departed Sydney 16

steamship: Departed Melbourne (21 May) per “Great Britain”, via
Cape Horn to Liverpool (22 Aug); by rail to Edinburgh, arriving 24
Aug 1857 (100 days). Note: There must have been some urgency for
this letter as the envelope was initially endorsed for the European
and Australian Royal Mail Co. steamer “Simla” but was crossed out
and allocated in the supplementary mail for an additional 6 d. to
catch the S.S. “Great Britain”, which left on the 21 May, as
opposed to the “Simla” which left on the 30 May

Given the cover is cancelled on this day, it must have caught the supplementary mail on the "Wonga Wonga" to arrive in time for the Melbourne sailing of the "European" on 16 December. Minor edge wear and some ageing consistent with postal use, but a fine and attractive early intercontinental envelope, illustrating the first P&O contract sailing from Sydney to London. Multiple transit datestamps on the reverse and with Aalesund arrival on obverse. Lower flap missing on the reverse and the cover with minor imperfections but an enormously scarce destination with Norway being by far the rarest destination of the Nordic countries, this cover being one of the earliest covers recorded from the Australian Colonies to Norway. Route - P&O Line: Departed Sydney 6 July 1878 per “Avoca” to Melbourne; “Assam” (9 July) to Galle (28 July); “Tehran” (31 July) via Suez Canal (17 Aug) to Alexandria; “Pera” (20 Aug) to Brindisi; by rail from Brindisi (24 Aug) to London (27 Aug); by steamer via Oslo to Aalesund, arriving 11 Sept 1878 (67 days). Note: A full transcript of the letter is included with this lot. Meranburn is a small farming community about 50km. west of Orange. The writer, Ole Svendsen, has bought a small farm but has not heard from his family in Norway for two years. He writes: “I have had some bad luck since I got here, losing one of my best horses. In the last 3 years we had no rain and until now we had some but so little that nothing grows and half of the stock is dead since no water was available to drink. There is winter here at the moment. We have Christmas in the middle of summer and it is so hot that we hardly get out of the house.”
