Tecumseh Mich. Feb. 23 (1846). Red circular datestamp with light
strike of matching "X" 10c rate handstamp on folded letter to
Jeremiah Spofford, East Bradford Mich., fascinating contents
expressing anti-war sentiment, including the prescient belief that
events following a Mexican-American War would lead to the extension
of slavery and an eventual separation of the Union, some minor
internal splits and slight toning, still Very Fine, ex Karbo,
partial transcription as follows (our selected highlights in bold):
Tecumseh 23d. Febr. 1846Dear Sir,Your letter of the 19th net, came
to hand on the 10th. Inst. and found your friends all in Tecumseh,
none having gone to Oregon or Texas, tho the Oregon feuse, is up to
fever heat with us out West; It is all of Oregon or none. And I
must say that my feelings are somewhat enlisted on the subject, but
I can't say, that I would prefer war, to the loss of a part of it,
say, to the 49°, neither should I be willing to have our
manufacturers sacrificed, by the reduction of the tariff to secure
the whole. I think the object will be attained without recourse to
either. Multiply, replenish and subdue as John Q. says, and the old
man is right on this subject. The tide of emigration is setting
west so rapidly, that in a few years we should be in possession of
the whole without any sacrifice on our part. I am predicting that a
much greater calamity is to befall us, than a war with England for
Oregon. The Annexation of Texas to our union, gives the south, with
the assistance of the doughfaces of the north, the control of the
destiny of our nation, and the object they have had so long in
view, will soon be accomplished. The reduction of the free labour
of the north, to the scale of slave labour of the south. This the
north will never submit to, and the consequence will be a
separation of the union. A calamity more decaded, than a war with
the whole combined powers of Europe
