Description

Reconquest of the Sudan 1898: Soudan 5 m. carmine postal stationery envelope, used as a Soldier's concessionary letter to Bury, Lancashire, endorsed from "Pte. Bigham, 2nd. Lancahire Fusiliers" and "Army of Occupation, Egypt", cancelled by two strikes of "ATBARA / S.P.S." cds's (Sept 9, 1898) in black. Reverse with Wadi Halfa transit cds (Sept 11), Alexandria cds (Sept 16) and Bury arrival (Sept 23). A fine cover mailed just a week after the decisive Battle of Omdurman - sold together with a 1 pi. blue Soudan stationery envelope used to England, neatly cancelled "Omdurman" cds's (Feb 28, 1899).
