Incoming Mail Overland via Marseilles 1861 (Dec 21): Cover from
Thizy, France to Sydney, New South Wales bearing 1853 France 20 c.
blue block of four, margins close to large all round and prepaying
80 centimes for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to New South Wales.
Endorsed “per Suez” at lower right and with a superb “Thizy”
despatch datestamp. Transit datestamps on the reverse for Lyon,
Marseilles and arrival at Sydney. Very fine condition and a rare
imperforate block on cover to Australia. Signed Goebel. Cert.
Eichele (1999). Route: Departed Thizy 21 Dec 1861 by rail to
Marseilles (22n Dec). P&O Line: Departed Marseilles (28 Dec)
per “Massilia” via Malta (30 Dec) to Alexandria (3 Jan 1862);
overland to Suez; “Simla” (9 Jan) to Galle (24 Jan); “Bombay” (25
Jan) via Mauritius (18 Feb), King Georges Sound (15 March) and
Melbourne to Sydney, arriving 25 March 1862 (94 days). Note: This
voyage was the slowest ever P&O mail to Australia. About 4 days
were lost in the Alexandria - Suez mail transfer. The “Bombay”
broke her shaft on February 2 after leaving Galle, sailing to
Mauritius for repairs (18-24 Feb), before sailing on to the
Australian ports. Provenance: Collection Purves
