these available", counter-signed by sender at lower left with "A.C.
(Acting Commander), Pin, U.B." (Upper Burma), cancelled by fine
strike of "PAGAN" cds of despatch (March 14) in black. The envelope
initially taxed with circular "T" marking but deleted by use of
barred handstamp in black. Accepted as fully paid and struck with
Bombay cds on reverse (March 23) and Romsey Station cds of arrival.
Rare. Note: Pagan (Bagan), a World Heritage site, is 115 miles
South West of Mandalay.

perforations ...more 1872/80: New currency, 24 cents green, vivid colour and perforations mainly fine, tied by duplex “COLOMBO JU 4 78” to a mourning envelope sent to Limla, India, endorsed “per P&O Steamer Via Galle”. Reverse, transit cds “GALLE JU 8 PAID”, “BOMBAY JUN 9” and arrival “DEL LIMLA JUN 13”. One short perf top. Attractive single franking. Scarce transitional rate. Mail to India in this period is not common. Comes with two additional covers, both sent from Colombo, one franked at the same 24c rate (FE 6 78) to Launceston, Cornwall, England via Marseille. Flap missing and edge faults. The other franked at the 48c rate (JA 18 77) sent to London. Scarce Transitional Rate covers with comparable at the previous rate.
