Recess by Desmadryl 1855 (Feb.): 5 c. deep reddish-brown, a used
example of fresh, deep colour and ample to good margins (showing
Plate Flaw, with horizontal line running from outside the left
margin across the first "R" of CORREOS, top half of "L" of COLON
and through "N" of FRANCO), neatly tied by clear target handstamp
with red "Santiago" despatch cds (Sept. 29) to 1855 entire letter
to Bordeaux (France), endorsed "por el Vapor", struck on reverse
with double line "PANAMA TRANSIT" and French entry cds "ANGL. AMB.
CALAIS J 14 NOV" in black on obverse. A remarkable and fine usage
paying the internal rate to Valparaiso, thence via PSNC steamer to
Panama and rated "21" centimes upon arrival in France. Signed

(shades), ...more Recess in Santiago "Estancos" 1856/62: Estancos 10 c. blue (shades), the Exhibit collection on leaves with 10 c. unused examples (4) in differring shades, two used examples with pre-printing paper folds, used examples showing the watermark and shade differences (14); Multiples with extremely rare block of ten - this being one of the largest known - marginal inscription pair, three strips of three and a strip of four; cancellation study with straight line handstampss of Constitution (on bisect piece), Parral (on bisect piece), Petorca, Santa Rosa and framed "Franca"; red and blue obliterator cancels and a fine range of covers with 10 c. pair used to USA Consul in Valparaiso (ex coll'n Gerhard Blank), single franking 1861 cover with "TOME" straight line adjacent, marginal inscription 10 c. on cover to Tocopilla; two examples on cover with straight line "S.ANTONIO" adjacent, cover front to France from Concepcion bearing three 10 c. sky-blue cancelled in blue; three single franking covers (one to Peru); and bisected usages (3) including one with MOLINA straight line handstamp. An outstanding lot (47 items).

single franking ex Valparaiso and oval "CONDUCCION / DEL CARTERO /
GRATIS" applied on arrival (free delivery); 1864 cover to Arequipa,
Peru with two 5 c. red tied by "INUTIL" obliterators in black; two
covers to Great Britain (surprisingly scarce destination for
stamped mail) each with three line "PANAMA / TRANSIT" dated transit
in black with 1864 entire to London franked single 5 c. red rated
"2/-" due on receipt, and similar 1863 cover to Scotland. Minor
imperfections, a scarce group.
