South ...more Overland via Marseilles 1857 (Oct 13): Entire from Sydney, New South Wales to Genova, Kingdom of Sardinia endorsed "per Simla via Marseille" bearing 1854 New South Wales Diadem 1 s. brownish-red, imperforate pair with four good to large margins, cancelled by Sydney bars obliterator and prepaid 2 s. comprising 1 s. 6 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter to the Kingdom of Sardinia plus 6 d. Supplementary fee transportation to Melbourne. “20” (dècimes) manuscript in black debit to France for forwarding to Sardinia and with clear transit datestamps on the reverse. Very fine and a very scarce usage of this 1 s. shade on cover and an important imperforate destination from the Australian Colonies with just four covers recorded from New South Wales to the Kingdom of Sardinia. Signed E. Asinelli. Route - Australasian Steam Navigation Co: Departed Sydney 13 Oct 1857 per “City of Sydney” to Melbourne. European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Melbourne (16 Oct) per “Simla” via Galle (6 Nov) to Suez (20 Nov); overland to Alexandria. Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: “Tamar” (27 Nov) to Malta (30 Nov); "Vanguard” to Marseilles (3 Dec) ; by rail from Marseilles via Paris to Genoa, arriving 5 Dec 1857 (59 days). Note: During the period 1856-1870, a Supplementary Mail was generally arranged to catch the mail steamer service to Melbourne. This was advertised for a period of one to three days following the departure of the main steamer from Sydney to Melbourne. Mail was accepted upon a Late Fee of 6 d. in addition to the postage. This additional charge was advertised as a Supplementary Fee

Nizza ...more Incoming Mail Overland via Marseilles 1859 (Feb 22): Cover from Nizza Maritima, Kingdom of Sardinia to Gladstone, Moreton Bay District (Queensland) bearing Sardinia 1855 40 c. vermilion pair, good margins all round except close at lower right (Sassone 16ab) cancelled by the Nizza Mara datestamp (Feb 22), prepaying 80 centesimi for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to the Moreton Bay District. Endorsed “Australie via Marseilles” at upper left and “P.P.” handstamp in red representing postage paid. Manuscript “4” (pence) in black for redirecting from Sydney to the Moreton Bay District. Transit datestamps on the reverse for Genoa, Malta, Maryborough and Gladstone. Very fine, and one of the great inwards origin/destination covers to the Australian Colonies. Route - Departed Nizza Mara 22 Feb 1859 overland to Genoa (23 Feb); by steamer to Malta (2 March). The European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed Malta (3 March) per “Panther” to Alexandra (7 March); overland to Suez. Departed Suez (16 March) per “Oneida” via Galle (7 April) and Melbourne (30 April) to Sydney (4 May). Private steam ship: Departed Sydney (10 May) per “Sea Gull” to Brisbane; overland via Maryborough (15 May) to Gladstone, arriving 4 June 1859 (102 days). Note: The cover is addressed to the wife of Sir Maurice O’Connell who was the Government Resident from 1854 to 1859 at Port Curtis. In 1860, when Queensland was declared a separate colony, he was appointed as a Member of the Legislative Council and was President until 1879. The finest and earliest of the two covers recorded from the Kingdom of Sardinia to the Moreton Bay District
