"Supposed Counterfeit" above and Inspector's marking "GR / ♚" in
red adjacent. Charge raised of "1/4d." due to pay in manuscript.
The Inspector's doubts were confirmed upon opening the letter which
was from a Mr. William Conway, and the Official wrote "This frank

rare and most unusual entire.

regulations with fine complete strike of the Maltese Cross in black
with Dublin despatch just above the Cross in red (July 17). Reverse
with Limerick arrival cds in black (July 18). If adhesives have
been removed the entire was still contrary to regulations, and it
appears that the Dublin cancellation was placed specifically in its
position so that there was no charge raised in Limerick.

manuscript "ship" top right and straight line 'CLONMELL' below,

endorsed "Stamped", with manuscript "1" prepayment in red, struck

this fashion are most uncommon, and much speculation has taken
place for the reason for this practice - however most examples
recorded (from circa 1700 through to the early 1840's) are from
Ireland, and it would seem logical to assume that the practice was
connected with anti-British sentiments.
