Dongola Expedition, Reconquest of the Sudan 1896: Soldier's
concessionary rate cover to Chesterfield endorsed "Stamps not
Obtainable" and "Pte. George Hyatt, N.S. Reg." (North Staffordshire
Regiment), counter-signed by Captain Marrowood at lower left,
struck with "WADI HALFA / CAMP" despatch cds (Aug 1) in black with
square "T" mark and Inland Branch "I.B./1d." charge marking in
black. Reverse with Cairo transit cds (Aug 9) and Chesterfield
arrival cds (Aug 17). Fine and scarce cover. Note: The North
Staffordshire Regiment were the only British Regiment involved in
this Campaign. The Dervishes were defeated by the end of September
1896.

First Nile Expedition 1884 (Oct 31): Cover, sensibly opened for
Exhibit display, addressed to 'Dr. H. Nielsen, Canadian Contingent,
Cairo, Egypt' franked by CANADA Small Queen 3 c. orange-red tied by
'Montreal / Canada' barred duplex in black. Struck with circular
'T' marking at left on despatch as short paid by 2 cents. On
arrival in Cairo 1884 10 pa. and 20 pa. red applied and tied (Nov
19) and left unclaimed, the Dues being deleted with 'T' markings.
Re-addressed to Wadi Halfa and again taxed on receipt with 1884
Postage Due 10 pa. and 20 pa. red (Nov 29) tied by WADI HALFA
bilingual cds's (Stagg fig. 4). Again the Doctor was not found and
the cover was readdressed again to Gemai before being returned to
Cairo (Dec 26) where struck with bilingual MAL DIRIGE SUR LE CAIRE
handstamp in black. Illustrated in Smith on colour plate 11.
Canadian 'Voyageurs' covers are rarities of this Campaign and this
cover is particularly exceptional

Incoming Mail Overland via Brindisi & Suez 1885 (April 20): Great
Britain 1 d. postal stationery envelope used from Suakim, Sudan to
Guildford, New South Wales cancelled by the British Army Post
Office in Egypt datestamp and prepaying 1 d. for the Soldier’s
concessionary rate to New South Wales. The envelope is endorsed at
the top by Corporal George Watt (Enlistment No: 110) of “A” Company
of the New South Wales contingent and countersigned at base
approving the concessionary rate by Lieutenant Colonel A. Paul. On
the reverse are arrival datestamps for Sydney and Guildford. Fine
condition and a very rare Sudan Campaign cover to Australia. Route:
Departed Suakim, Sudan by steamer to Alexandria 20 April 1885; by
rail to Suez; Orient Line: Departed Suez (1 May) per “Austral” via
Adelaide (24 May) to Sydney, arriving 27 May 1885 (40 days). Note:
The New South Wales Infantry Contingent of 750 men arrived at the
port of Suakim, Sudan on the 27 March 1885. They were only involved
with brief skirmishes and left Sudan on the 17 May when the
campaign ended. Nine covers from the New South Wales Infantry
Contingent in Sudan are recorded

envelope, used as a Soldier's concessionary letter to Bury,
Lancashire, endorsed from "Pte. Bigham, 2nd. Lancahire Fusiliers"
and "Army of Occupation, Egypt", cancelled by two strikes of
"ATBARA / S.P.S." cds's (Sept 9, 1898) in black. Reverse with Wadi
Halfa transit cds (Sept 11), Alexandria cds (Sept 16) and Bury
arrival (Sept 23). A fine cover mailed just a week after the
decisive Battle of Omdurman - sold together with a 1 pi. blue
Soudan stationery envelope used to England, neatly cancelled
"Omdurman" cds's (Feb 28, 1899).
