III 5 A/B) with good even margins all round, used on 1854 single rate cover to Dublin, Ireland endorsed "per first mail Steamer to England", cancelled by CGH obliterator in black (4 d. internal + 4 d. port fee). Reverse with oval framed GRAHAMSTOWN despatch datestamp in red (Feb 14) and Cape Town cds (Feb 18), carried on "R.M.S. Hydaspes" of the General Screw Shipping Co. with London cds and Dublin arrival (April 22) cds in red on reverse and charged "1/-" due to pay. Slight soiling but an attractive cover. Provenance: Collection Sir Henry Tucker, Harmers, London, 20 Nov 1979, lot 32; collection R. Johnson and Dr. Guy Dillaway.

franked ...mehr 1859/60: Covers (2) to Portarlington, Ireland with 1859 cover franked by 1853 Perkins Bacon 1 d. red-brown on blued paper in a pair, originally applied around edge of the cover, and oxidised 4 d. deep blue each tied by oval "FORT BEAUFORT" datestamps (July 7) - an extremely rare usage of the datestamp, introduced as a despatch or arrival marking to be applied generally on the reverse - and a second 1860 cover from the same correspondence with 1856/66 6 d. rose-lilac with good to poor margins correctly tied by CGH obliterator and by "Devonport Packet" cds; both with "5" (pence) credit in red crayon. Despite faults, a scarce pair of covers.
