1838 (3 Aug) Macao to Aberdeenshire, Scotland per the Ship of “Earl
of Balcarras” for China. From the famous William Leslie
correspondence in which the narratives mentioned “…… Sir Frederick
, Lady Maitland / the Naval Commander out here for the East Indies
/ is here in “HMS Wellesley” 74 (guns) with the “Lavina 18 (guns)”
& “Aegverin 10 (guns)” – which has enlivened the place a good deal.
Sir Frederick was the Captain who took Napoleon in the Bellicophon
in June 1815 and is a splendid specimen of a British Admiral of the
Nelson School. “2/-” is the unpaid rate charged from Macao to
Dover, England, and “ ½ ” is the local charge when arrived at
Aberdeenshire, Scotland. This is a forerunner of First Opium War,
in which the letter provides a detailed account of British naval
and civilian people to flee to Macao, China. All the senior
military officers mentioned in this letter were the key commanders
to take lead and involve in many battles during the First Opium
War. Sir Frederick Maitland was the Rear-Admiral commander of the
East Indies and China Station, and died in November 1839. A very
good First Opium War letter, full of characters.

1840 (19 Mar) Macao to Chichester, England, J. Silverlock
correspondence The letter referred to the British military
reinforcement during the first few months in 1840 right after the
First Battle of Chuenpi in Nov 1839. The letter content stated: “…
we are still quietly residing at this place (Macao), and apparently
shall continue free from Chinese annoyance till the existing
difficulties are settled. By an opium clipper from Calcutta, we
have news from England to the 4th November, but no letters for us,
ours having unfortunately been sent via Bombay – it appears the
Governor General of India is entirely engaged in making
preparations for dispatching a force to China. It is to consist of
three Steamers, and some men of war from the Indian station, also a
military force is now held in readiness at Calcutta for immediate
service. There are all to arrive here in May and we are also told
by some parties that three ships of the line with their attendant
frigates, etc were to be dispatched from England to meet the Indian
force in the China seas.” Subsequent to the above, the British
forces then formally launched strike to the North of the China
after mobilizing its military base in India and Australia completed
in May-June 1840. A good letter to have an account of the state of
military affairs in early 1840. Ex Perical David Collection

1842 (23 Oct) A Good Historic Dispatch from Hong Kong to Ireland On
Board H.M.S. Agincourt: Witness to the Aftermath of the Treaty of
Nanking Penned by Captain Henry Bruce aboard H.M.S. Agincourt,
anchored in the newly acquired British colony of Hong Kong, this
remarkable letter offers a firsthand account of the final chapters
of the First Opium War (1839–1842)—a conflict that reshaped
Sino-British relations and cemented Hong Kong’s fate as a Crown
Colony. A Commander’s Perspective: Captain Bruce was no ordinary
officer—he commanded one of the two flagship vessels present in
Hong Kong during the historic signing of the Treaty of Nanking (29
August 1842), which formally ended the war. His letter, written
just two months later, captures the immediate postwar transition:
the withdrawal of British forces, the logistical challenges of
occupation, and the human toll of tropical disease on European
troops. Postal Significance: A Rare Wartime Ship Letter • This
dispatch was not sent via official naval channels but entrusted to
a private vessel, later entering the British postal system at
Devonport. Its markings tell a story. • A striking red “DEVONPORT /
SHIP LETTER” handstamp, confirming its maritime routing. A
manuscript “8(p)” rate mark, indicating an unpaid ½-oz letter (8
pence due upon delivery)—unusual for military correspondence, which
typically enjoyed franking privileges. This suggests either urgency
or an informal dispatch method. A Glimpse into the Post-War Exodus;
Bruce’s words paint a vivid picture of the British withdrawal: “We
have now been here rather more than a month… The (HMS) Modeste
arrived yesterday from Sir William Parker at Chusan and goes home…
Sir Henry Pottinger [Hong Kong’s first Governor] wishes to return
but awaits Whitehall’s permission… The (HMS) Blenheim departs for
England soon. Our crews are dreadfully sickly—the men suffer but do
not die; the soldiers fare worse, perishing in great numbers. The
troopship Belleisle arrives shortly with Lord Saltoun and the 26th
& 98th Regiments…” A Lucrative Final Duty for Captain H. Bruce In a
telling postscript to the war, Bruce reveals his unexpected role:
escorting 5 million silver dollars (the first installment of
China’s $21 million indemnity under the Treaty) back to England—and
receiving a percentage for his troubles. A stark reminder of how
Britain’s victory was as much economic as it was military. Why This
Letter Matters” • Rarity: Few wartime letters from high-ranking
officers detail the Treaty’s immediate aftermath. • Postal
Hybridity: Its mix of private carriage and postal processing
reflects the ad-hoc systems of early colonial Hong Kong. • Human
Cost: Bruce’s notes on disease underscore why the British later
dubbed Hong Kong the “white man’s grave.” • A relic of empire, this
dispatch bridges naval history, postal evolution, and the grim
realities of colonial expansion.

November 1840, an important First Opium War printed circular
regarding the change of Plenipotentiary to China Dated 2nd December
1840 in Macao, this printed circular was sent to London and at the
back flap with forwarder agent double-oval mark of “WHITE BARDAS &
CO. BOMBAY, 19 Jan 1841”. This letter, in its 7th paragraph, has
stated that Admiral George Elliot was relieved of his command and
sent back to England due to his heart illness. Admiral George
Elliot was then replaced by captain Charles Elliot to succeed him
as Plenipotentiary, but captain Elliot was indeed not appreciated
for being able to closely follow the directives of Lord Melbourne,
the Premier of England. In several months later, Charles Elliot was
eventually replaced in 1841 by Sir Henry Pottinger, who became the
first governor in Hong Kong. The paragraph mentioned: “On the 29th
November, Admiral Elliot resigned his command on the plea of bad
health; he has been laboring under palpitation of the heart for
months, and allowed all the negotiations with the Chinese to be
solely conducted by captain Charles Elliot, who succeeds him as
Plenipotentiary, thus virtually doing what Lord Melbourne, the
premier of England said in his place in the House of Lords, should
not be done, namely, captain Elliot placed in the direction of the
expedition. The result all can read as they run – a monsoon lost; 6
months wasted; vast expense incurred; 500 gallant soldiers buried,
and the settlement not advanced one step! Not even a promise
offered by our cautious enemies, many of whom know well how to
baffle captain Elliot. Sir Gordon Bremer succeeds to the command of
the expedition, but whether his is Plenipotentiary here or not not,
we are left in ignorance. And then the printed circular also
recorded a printed letter by George Elliot replied on the HMS
Melville to the correspondence of a group of trade union: “In
answer to your letter of yesterday, I regret to say, I can only
give you an answer to one of your queries, namely, with regard to
the truce agreed to at Chusan. It was entered into with the
governor-general of that province, and does not extend further. I
am perfectly aware, gentlemen, of the state of anxiety the
mercantile interests must be in, to know what is likely to take
place; and shall take care to give the arliest intimation in my
power of anything bearing on such interest, but at present I am
myself ignorant of the intentions of the Chinese government, and
can therefore only express my hope that your suspense will now be
of short duration (Signed) GEORGE ELLIOT / Rear Admiral, and
Commander-in-Chief”

1840 (29 Jul) Macao Letter sent to Yorkshire, England during the
beginning of the First Opium War. Boxed handstamp of “INDIA LETTER
/ SOUTHAMPTON”, carried by vessel Mor., with rate mark of “8”
charged 8p to the recipient. The letter mentioned the trade of tea
including the export of 29 chests Congo (per ship Harburger) and
14.5 chests TwanKay (per ship Earl Balcarras). Despite some
interruptions and trade barriers occurred over the height time of
the First Opium War period, the trade and export actually continued
at the time. Congo was obviously more expensive than TwanKay. Congo
was an anglicized version of the Chinese工夫茶 (gōngfu chá). TwanKay
was a type of green tea, which the name is derived from a
transliteration of Tunxi (屯溪), a tea-trading town in Anhui
province. 8p was a standard rate charged to ship letters from both
India and China, and the rate was changed from Jan 1840. Therefore,
it explained even the letter sent from Macao, China, it carried an
INDIA Ship Letter handstamp.
