Gibraltar to Melbourne, Victoria bearing Great Britain 1858 2 d.
blue, plate 9 and 1865 4 d. vermillion, plate 10 cancelled by “A26”
obliterator of Gibraltar and prepaying 6 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship
letter to Victoria. Very fine and a rare destination. The only
recorded cover from the British Post Office in Gibraltar to the
Australian Colonies. Route - P&O Line: Departed Gibraltar 5 Nov
1868 per “Ceylon” via Malta (9 Nov) to Alexandria (12 Nov);
overland to Suez; “Simla” (15 Nov) to Galle (29 Nov); “Bombay” (1
Dec) via King Georges Sound (16 Dec) to Melbourne, arriving 22 Dec
1868 (49 days). Note: This cover is addressed to Hussey Burgh
Macartney, the Reverend Dean of Melbourne, with this cover
emanating from the famous Macartney family correspondence, a
prolific inwards correspondence over three generations to the
Australian Colonies, principally Melbourne. Provenance: Collection

Melbourne, Victoria and endorsed "Two Papers Only", bearing 1864
Great Britain 1 d. red pair, cancelled by a circular barred grid
obliterator and prepaying 2 d. for a newspaper to Victoria. The
survival rate of newspapers mailed to the Australian Colonies is

by "London/Ja 13, 1858" stamp and cover faults, partly accounted
for by its over 30,000 mile round trip!! some minor splits repaired
internally with archival tape & a filled punch hole on chest of
left Aborigine, Fine and a lettersheet and usage, an exceptionally
rare and interesting item for which the consignor paid $1300 with

South もっと見る Overland via Marseilles 1857 (Oct 13): Entire from Sydney, New South Wales to Genova, Kingdom of Sardinia endorsed "per Simla via Marseille" bearing 1854 New South Wales Diadem 1 s. brownish-red, imperforate pair with four good to large margins, cancelled by Sydney bars obliterator and prepaid 2 s. comprising 1 s. 6 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter to the Kingdom of Sardinia plus 6 d. Supplementary fee transportation to Melbourne. “20” (dècimes) manuscript in black debit to France for forwarding to Sardinia and with clear transit datestamps on the reverse. Very fine and a very scarce usage of this 1 s. shade on cover and an important imperforate destination from the Australian Colonies with just four covers recorded from New South Wales to the Kingdom of Sardinia. Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: “Tamar” (27 Nov) to Malta (30 Nov); "Vanguard” to Marseilles (3 Dec) ; by rail from Marseilles via Paris to Genoa, arriving 5 Dec 1857 (59 days). Note: During the period 1856-1870, a Supplementary Mail was generally arranged to catch the mail steamer service to Melbourne. This was advertised for a period of one to three days following the departure of the main steamer from Sydney to Melbourne. Mail was accepted upon a Late Fee of 6 d. in addition to the postage. This additional charge was advertised as a Supplementary Fee

Incoming Mail Overland via Southampton 1870 (Nov 14): Cover from
Christiania, Norway to Ballarat, Victoria, redirected to Godfrey’s
Creek bearing 1867 Norway 3 sk. violet and 24 sk. bistre-brown (Mi.
13+10) cancelled by Christiana datestamps (Nov 10) and prepaying 27
skilling for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria with weiterfranco
"Wfr. 8" in crayon on obverse. Reverse with Flensburg transit
datestamp and arrivals of Melbourne and Ballarat. On arrival at
Ballarat, the addressee Oscar Wedel was unable to be located and
there is a manuscript endorsement on the reverse “Gone away” and
the “Not known by / Letter Carrier” handstamp in black applied on
obverse. The cover was subsequently redirected to the gold diggings
at Godfrey’s Creek (Feb 13). Route - By Steamship: Departed Oslo 14
Nov 1870 to Flensburg (18 Nov); by rail via London to Southampton.
P&O Line: Departed Southampton (26 Nov) per “Poona” via Malta
(5 Dec) to Alexandria (9 Dec); overland to Suez; “Mongolia” (12
Dec) to Galle (28 Dec); “Avoca” (29 Dec) via King Georges Sound 12
Jan 1871 to Melbourne (18 Jan); by rail via Ballarat (18 Jan) and
Melbourne (11 Feb) to Godfrey’s, arriving 13 Feb 1871 (95 days).
Note: Only three skilling covers are recorded from Norway to the
Australian Colonies, this being the second earliest and the only
example with this issue. Two covers are recorded from this recently
discovered correspondence

Smyrna, Austrian Post Offices in Levant to Melbourne, Victoria
bearing 1867 5 s. rose-red, 15 s. yellow-brown in a vertical pair
(Mi 3+5b) cancelled by the Smyrna datestamp (Aug 29) and prepaying
35 soldi for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Victoria. Endorsed “Via
Alexandria” at top left and with Alexandria and Melbourne
datestamps on the reverse. Very fine and a rare destination. Cert.
Sorani (1995). Route - Adriatic & Oriental Line: Departed Smyrna by
steamer 30 Aug 1869 to Alexandria (6 Sept). P&O Line: Departed
Alexandria (7 Sept); overland to Suez; “Surat” (19 Sept) to Galle
(4 Oct); “Avoca” (5 Oct) via King Georges Sound (20 Oct) to
Melbourne, arriving 26 Oct 1869 (58 days). Note: This cover is
addressed to the famous Melbourne merchants of Germain Nicholson.
The contents relate to the trade of figs, sultanas, raisins and
opium. The earliest of the two recorded covers from the Austrian
Post Offices in the Levant to the Australian Colonies. Illustrated
in “Die Osterreichische Post in der Levant" by Werner Schindler on
page 481

cover from St. Petersburg, Russia to Melbourne, Victoria prepaid 38
kopeks: 30 kopeks for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter plus 8 kopeks
registration to Victoria. Multiple postal markings include “30/8”
(kopeks) manuscript in red representing the prepayment and “8”
(pence) manuscript in red credit from Prussia to England for
onwards transmission to Victoria. “AUS RUSSLAND / FRANCO - TOUT”
handstamp in black representing the rail carriage from Russia
through France and “Recomandirt” registered handstamp in red
applied at the Eydtkuhnen exchange office. “PRUSSIA / ♚ /
REGISTERED” handstamp in red applied in London and “P.D.” handstamp
in red representing paid to destination. Some minor cover
reinforcement internally, otherwise very fine and an extraordinary
origin for a registered cover to the Australian Colonies. Believed
to be the earliest cover recorded from Russia to the Australian
Colonies. Route - Departed St. Petersburg 27 July 1867 by rail via
Eydtkuhnen, Konnigsberg and Aachen to London (14 Aug); by rail to
Southampton. P&O Line: Departed Southampton (20 Aug) per
“Ceylon” via Malta (29 Aug) to Alexandria (2 Sept); overland to
Suez; “Surat” (5 Sept) grounding on a reef in the Red Sea. Mails
transferred to “Nubia” (11 Sept) to Galle (24 Sept); “Bombay” (24
Sept) via King Georges Sound (8 Oct) to Melbourne, arriving 14 Oct
1867 (77 days). Note: Although postage stamps had been introduced
in Russia in 1858, the Russian postal regulations stipulated that:
"Postage stamps are only intended for ordinary letters, the postage
rate for sending money, registered correspondence and letters
destined for abroad to be paid in cash"

Overland via Marseilles 1857 (June 19): Entire from Melbourne,
Victoria to Gothenburg, Sweden bearing 1854 Victoria Woodblock 6 d.
dull orange, single and horizontal pair, each with good to large
margins and 1857 Emblem 2 d. pale lilac, touched at left, cancelled
by barred numeral “1” of Melbourne, prepaying 1 s. 8 d. for a ½
ounce ship letter to Sweden. Manuscript “32” (skilling) at left and
italic “36s BCO” handstamp in black for ship letter inwards fees to
be paid by the recipient. Some minor blemishes and pressed filing
crease, however very rare, being the third earliest cover recorded
from Victoria to Sweden. Illustrated in colour in “The Pre-UPU
Destination Mail of Victoria” by Ben Palmer on Colour Plate 12.

Overland via Marseilles 1858 (July 16): Entire from Melbourne,
Victoria to Gotheborg, Sweden bearing 1854 Victoria Woodblock 6 d.
dull orange with four margins, cancelled by barred numeral “1” of
Melbourne and prepaying 6 d. and underpaid 1 s. 2 d. for a ½ ounce
ship letter of 1 s. 8 d. to Sweden. Struck with “DETAINED FOR “1/2”
POSTAGE” handstamp in black representing the underpayment and
“1Rdr.24sBCO” in black for the postage to be paid by the recipient.
The part pre-payment of 6 d. was not accepted by the Swedish postal
authorities and the entire was taxed as completely unpaid. Transit
datestamps of Melbourne, 'Australie V. Suez', Paris, Hamburg and
Gothenburg. A remarkable taxed cover from the Australian Colonies,
unrecorded by Ben Palmer, being the fourth earliest cover from
Victoria to Sweden. It is believed that there are just three
examples recorded of this Swedish tax handstamp. Fine and very
rare. Route - European and Australian Royal Mail Co: Departed
Melbourne per “Emeu” 16 July 1858 via Galle (7 Aug) to Suez;
overland to Alexandria. P&O Line: “Teviot” (26 Aug) to Malta
(30 Aug) Royal Mail Steam Packet Co: Wye” (30 Aug) to Marseilles (2
Sept); by rail via Paris to Hamburg (5 Sept); by steamer to
Gothenburg (9 Sept); overland to Stahla, arriving 11 Sept 1858 (160
days). Note: This cover was detained at the Melbourne G.P.O. from
the 4 April until the addressee had prepaid the additional 1 s. 2
d. (in manuscript within the 'Detained' handstamp). However, the
additional amount should have been 1 s. 8 d. for a total of 2 s. 2
d. via Marseilles. The additional 1 s. 2 d. only prepaid the letter
via Southampton
