Northern Nigeria West African Frontier Force, 1901 (Nov 10):
Stampless cover with original contents from Lt. Wilkin to his
step-brother in Devon, marked "No stamps obtainable", manuscript
´Ibi 18 11 01´ in violet ink and "NORTHERN NIGERIA" transit cds
with another strike on reverse, Charged postage due on arrival with
blue crayon "T" and "1d/620" tax markings and "SOUTH MOLTON"
arrival (Jan 3) cds. The letter was written from Wase, north of
Amar which was on the River Benue in the old Province of Muri. The
sender speaks of the fact that there are no farm houses in the
country but all the farmers live in the villages or towns fortified

1901 ‘campaign’ cover to London, with the original letter, from the Walter Wilkins correspondence, written in WASE, a town in the west of Northern Nigeria. On the back is a NORTHERN NIGERIA NO 7 1901datestampand a London DE 5 01 arrival c.d.s. The letter, dated 30.10.01 Wilkins Wilkins who was serving with the West Africa Frontier Force, describes the death at the hands of the French at Gujiba of Fad-El-Allah, a native leader who had claimed British protection. His death occurred on 23rd August but news of it had only just reached Wase. The French had penetrated 150 miles into British territory to kill him! A very fascinating account of life in the territory at that time
