RARE 18th CENTURY COVERING LETTER FOR MAIL SENT TO "CANTON IN
CHINA" ...di più RARE 18th CENTURY COVERING LETTER FOR MAIL SENT TO "CANTON IN CHINA" VIA A LONDON AGENT; 16 Dec. 1774 EL that originally enclosed a letter to be sent to “Canton in China… [to be] forwarded by first Ships”; it was sent from “Ab[er]d[ee]n” (Scotland) to London by private means and posted there unpaid in the General Office of the ‘London Penny Post’ system (2-ring “PENNY POST NOT PAID/.G” on the front and “O’CLOCK/9/G” time-mark on the flap) to a merchant with strong connections to China. The writer and addressee were clearly aware of the East India Co. system of sending ships to India/China at the turn of each year. The letter that had been sent inside this one was almost certainly forwarded by the E.I.C. ship ‘Lord North’ (Captain Hambly). That ship left “the Downs” (off Deal) on 27 Dec. 1774, and the addressee of this letter, the London merchant “James Brander”, noted that he had received the letters on 24 Dec. 1774. The ‘Lord North’ stopped at C.G.H. (5 Apr. 1775) and Sumatra (5 June) en route to “Whampoa” (the port for Canton, i.e. Guangzhou) where it arrived on 31 July 1775. This is the earliest recorded evidence of mail-forwarding from London to China in private hands by some 50 years. [The addressee of the enclosed letter, “Charles Gordon” was the son of a recently deceased E.I.C. Surgeon, Robert Gordon, who had also been a major merchant and money-lender in Canton for many years.] Cross Reference : LONDON POSTAL HISTORY, SCOTLAND, CHINA (Estimate 300 GBP)

VERY RARE MANUSCRIPT "10 Cents" BOAT OFFICE ENDORSEMENT ON ...di più
VERY RARE MANUSCRIPT "10 Cents" BOAT OFFICE ENDORSEMENT ON EARLY
MACAO COVER TO CANTON; 29 Nov. 1834 EL (some wrinkles; contents ex
destitute American seeking help to return to home) from “Macao” to
“Canton” carried by the Union or St. George of the Local ‘Boat
Office’ Post service and so has the Post’s manuscript “10. Cents”
charge (for a “Single Letter”) on the top flap. Canton Boat Office
did not employ a handstamp for this 10c charge, although Macao Boat
Office did from 1832 to 1838. Only two examples of this Canton
Manuscript “10. Cents” marking have been recorded – the other
example was in the Richard Chan collection and was from the same
correspondence but dated 27 Sept. 1834 [Cavendish Oct. 2003, lot
430, realised £800+BP]. This first local Boat Office mail service
linking Canton and Macao started in 1832; “The Proprietor of the
UNION and the ST. GEORGE respectfully informs the Gentlemen of
Canton and Macao, from 1 April 1832 next. Letters and parcels
forwarded by either of the boats will be charged at the following
rates:- Single Letters – 10c each...". The Macao “Boat OFFICE/10
Cents” marks (1832-38) are well known, but this is one of only two
recorded covers with this matching Canton “10 Cents” manuscript
mark. Important Exhibition Item. Cross Reference : CHINA, MACAO
