Eutaw Ala. Feb. 23 (1846). Circular datestamp in black with clear strike of black "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA/HALF/DIME" negative coin handstamp on folded cover to Greensboro Ala., Very Fine, the Eutaw "Half Dime" and "One Dime" coin handstamps are usually struck in blue and rarely in black (plus one reported example in red)

margins all around, bright shade, tied by two strikes of "Clayton
Ala. Jan. 3" (1864) circular datestamp on cover to Miss Sara M.
Avery in Houston Tex. and addressed "Care of E. H. Cushing",
sender's directive "Via Meridian & Shreveport" at bottom and "Care
of Hon. D D Avery of La." at right, strip has a hint of a light
pre-use crease at top, mention of which only serves to emphasize
its outstanding condition, two small age spots in center of
coverEXTREMELY FINE GEM STRIP OF FOUR OF THE 10-CENT ENGRAVED ISSUE
ON A WESTBOUND TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS COVER. WESTBOUND COVERS
ARE MUCH SCARCER THAN EASTBOUND COVERS.This cover was sent in care
of E. H. Cushing, publisher of the Houston Daily Telegraph and a
well-known express agent and mail forwarder. He established private
express routes after the fall of New Orleans in April 1862 and
affixed labels to mail he handled. This cover was carried west by
the government Trans-Mississippi Express and presumably delivered
to Cushing for forwarding. The Walske-Trepel Special Routes book
states fewer than 50 westbound Trans-Mississippi express covers are
known, making them about three times scarcer than eastbound
