ON A WESTBOUND TRANS-MISSISSIPPI EXPRESS COVER. WESTBOUND COVERS
ARE MUCH SCARCER THAN EASTBOUND COVERS.This cover was sent in care
of E. H. Cushing, publisher of the Houston Daily Telegraph and a
well-known express agent and mail forwarder. He established private
express routes after the fall of New Orleans in April 1862 and
affixed labels to mail he handled. This cover was carried west by
the government Trans-Mississippi Express and presumably delivered
to Cushing for forwarding. The Walske-Trepel Special Routes book
states fewer than 50 westbound Trans-Mississippi express covers are
known, making them about three times scarcer than eastbound
covers.Illustrated in Krieger (p. 42, No. E14). Ex Kilbourne
