New Orleans Postal History Balance. Approximately 65 covers from
1830s thru 1870s, all but two stampless, including 1832 fumuigated,
also including drop letters, circulars, some inbound including from
foreign destinations, also some sent to foreign destinations
including Cuba, Scotland, England, Ireland, France, range of
markings, few faults to be expected but selected by the owner for

Arthur H. Edey's Express. Black on white newsprint label "FORWARDED
BY/ARTHUR H. EDEY, Agent, Fifth Reg't Texas Volunteers" affixed to
upper left corner, 10c Rose (5) shows the burden of wartime
conditions and age, neat manuscript cancel and tied by red
"Alexandria La. Aug. 12" (1862) circular datestamp on buff cover to
Columbus Tex., from the Bostick correspondence, carried west and
entered the mails at Alexandria La., diagonal slit in cover,
scattered soiling specks and other effects of ageONE OF EIGHT
RECORDED COVERS WITH THE EDEY LABEL, OF WHICH HALF ARE AFFIXED TO
THE BACKS. THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EDEY EXPRESS COVER WITH THE
10-CENT ROSE. IT IS ALSO THE ONLY EDEY COVER POSTED OUTSIDE OF
TEXAS.Arthur H. Edey enlisted as a Private in Co. A, 5th Regiment,
Texas Infantry, on July 19, 1861, at Houston. He was detailed as
agent for the regiment at the Texas Depot in Richmond on Feb. 7,
1862. In this capacity, Edey facilitated mail service between
members of the regiment serving east of the Mississippi and their
correspondents back home. Edey affixed his label to envelopes that
were carried by civilians or soldiers who were willing to take them
and mail them when they arrived in Texas. In October 1862 Edey was
transferred back to the 5th Texas Regiment and was replaced by
Sergeant Jefferson Wright, who left his position after a month.
Edey was wounded and captured at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863, and
sent to Fort Wood, New York Harbor. He was paroled on April 15,
1865. (Updated info from Crown, CWPS website).The CWPS census
records eight examples of Edey's label, including a few heavily
stained or defective covers. Only four have the label on the front
of the cover. This is the only cover with the 10c Rose and the only
one postmarked outside of Texas.Ex Parks, Lemley, Everett and
Pegram. With 1977 C.S.A. certificate

Seaver Jun. Photographer, 27 Tremont Row, Boston" imprint and description of the photo headlined "The Peculiar Institution", also pencil "Carried with me while in the Army 1864" VERY FINE AND RARE CARTE-DE-VISITE OF GORDON OR "WHIPPED PETER", THE ESCAPED LOUISIANA SLAVE WHO ENLISTED IN THE UNION ARMY'S CORPS D'AFRIQUE, AND WHOSE BRUTALIZED BODY BECAME A DEFINING IMAGE OF THE CIVIL WAR. This image originally appeared in the July 4, 1863 edition of Harper's Weekly, showing a similar illustration as well as illustrations of "Gordon as he entered our lines" and "Gordon in his uniform as a U.S. Soldier". The issue also included information on Battle of Milliken's Bend — the first major battle involving black troops (Harper's article is not included but can be seen in Sale 1037, lot 2869). After enlisting Gordon fought at, among other places, the Siege of Port Hudson in May 1863, which was a major assault where African American soldiers played a leading role. Ex "Clovis".
