In an effort to improve communications between Texas regiments in the East and their relations at home, as well as secure safe lines for news transmission, Cushing established routes with pony riders and other means of conveyance necessary to cross the Federal lines. Cushing’s agents affixed labels to envelopes, usually on the backs. These were intended to inform patrons and advertise the service.The CWPS census records 24 examples (all varieties, including four described as not showing evidence of postal use). Congressman Jacob Thompson in Washington D.C., letter requests a
furlough for the writer's son, extensive docketing inside in
magenta pen traces its journey from Adjutant General Roger Jones
(including signed by him), referral by military mail to Monterrey,
Mexico and General John E. Wool, who also signed it and then sent
it to Col. Hamtramck, who signed it and referred it back to General
Wool, seeing no merit in the request, finally returned to Rep.
Thompson, Very Fine, a fascinating piece of Mexican-American War
history, encompassing a number of prominent figures: Representative
Thompson later served as U.S. Secretary of the Interior and
Inspector General of the Confederate Army; General Wool served in
each of the War of 1812, Mexican-American War, Indian Wars and
Civil War; General Jones was the longest serving Adjutant General
in U.S. Army History (and father of Catesby ap Roger Jones); Col.
Hamtramck also served in the War of 1812 and was the son of John
Francis Hamtramck, a Canadian-born Continental Army officer during
the American Revolutionary War and the Northwest Indian War, when
the elder Hamtramck died in 1803 future President William Henry
Harrison became the boy's temporary guardian

Spring backward, but it will all be right at harvest" — affixed to back of brown cover originating west of the Mississippi River and addressed to Mrs. S. R. Markham in Liberty Miss., no postal markings, trace of stamp peeled off at upper right, we suspect the addressee removed an uncancelled stamp and used it, label and cover in excellent condition FINE. Huge collection in seven binders, more than 480 covers in total, comprehensive treatment of Natchez from Mississippi Territory through the 1857-60 Issue stamp period, volume 1 binder from 1801-1812 has approximately 39 covers, begins with 1801 from Natchez (without postmark), a number of early manuscript postmarks from 1803-04, the large "NATCHEZ" straightline is well represented with 18 examples, spanning 1806-09, a great many of the early circular datestamps with "NATCz MT" span volumes 1-2, volume 2 binder from 1813-18 and a section of covers that relate to Natchez but not from there, includes more early circular datestamps and a War of 1812 surcharge cover, volumes 3-6 continue with stampless covers with many colored datestamps including green and purple, some foreign destinations, volume 7 contains stamped covers from 1851-60 including 1c covers, lots of 3c with couple No. 10, few 12c covers, range of condition with some faults to be expected but a great many are Very Fine, a significant collection better appreciated by viewing our website PDF
