(1855) circular datestamp on buff cover to James Alexander while at Williams College in Massachusetts, clear strike of red "Honolulu *U.S. Postage Paid* Jun. 16" circular datestamp at left, carried on the Vaquero from Honolulu, departing June 17 and arriving San Francisco July 4, original four-page enclosure is from the Reverend William Patterson Alexander, a member of the Fifth Company of missionaries, cover with edgewear including corner nick, strip with nicked corner at top right, otherwise Fine and scarce, the letter is datelined "Honolulu June 16th 1855". He writes (in part): "Great changes have taken place in Oahu College this month. The president gave notice that believing there were elements in the institution which would hinder its development he should resign at the close of his official year. This lead to a series of matters which at length brought out the expression of the opinion of � �s of the trustees, that they considered Mr. Dole's permanence as professor unfavorable to the prosperity of Oahu college. Mr. Dole accordingly has resigned & Mr. George Beckwith has been elected to fill his place. I hope he will accept. Mrs. Kinney also has been elected to take charge of a primary department there & be a mother to the children. She has accepted. I hope the school will go on ever more prosperous....Paki, the large old high chief father in law of Mr. Charles Bishop died yesterday morning. I am sorry to hear he died interstate & will leave his great estate exposed to the quirks of lawyers." etc., ex Tows, Ostheimer, Honolulu Advertiser and Craveri
