(U.S. Military Government) Kearny's Military Mail Service. Folded
letter without cover or postmarks, datelined July 13, 1847 from
Captain Joseph L. Folsom, acting military postmaster and headlined
Assistant Quartermaster's Office, San Francisco, to the new
American Mayor (alcalde) John Burton in San Jose, lengthy letter
includes concerns around procurement of horses to maintain military
courier service VERY FINE. WHILE NOT A POSTMARKED COVER, THIS IS A
VERY RARE EXAMPLE OF A LETTER THAT WAS CARRIED BY GENERAL KEARNY'S
MILITARY MAIL SERVICE—THE FIRST OFFICIAL UNITED STATES MAIL ROUTE
IN CALIFORNIA. After General Stephen W. Kearny was appointed
military governor of California, following the 1847 Treaty of
Cahuenga, he established a regional mail service along part of the
old Spanish Royal Road (Camino Real). This is the first official
United States mail route in California. The mail was carried by two
parties of two soldiers each on horseback, departing simultaneously
from San Francisco and San Diego. The U.S.-occupied cities of San
Jose (addressed here), Monterey, Dana Ranch, Santa Barbara and Los
Angeles were between the two terminal points. The northbound riders
met the southbound riders at Dana Ranch and exchanged the mail
bags, then made their respective return trips. The trips started at
San Francisco and San Diego on every other Monday (beginning April
19, 1847). The rendezvous at Dana Ranch would take place on the
following Saturday, and the return trips would start the next day
(Sunday) and reach San Francisco and San Diego one week later (on
Sunday). Military and civilian mail was carried on this route, free
of charge. The original Kearny mail route was shortened by
Lieutenant William T. Sherman (of Civil War fame) on August 11,
1848. It operated between San Francisco and Monterey until the U.S.
Post Office route was established in early 1849, which eliminated
the need for the military mail service. We offered a cover with a
red San Francisco postmark of Dec. 27, 1847, probably applied by
Captain Joseph L. Folsom, the acting military postmaster and the
writer of this letter, which is the only recorded postmarked cover
carried by Kearny's Military Mail Service (Vaquero Sale 1331, lot
1020, realized $15,000 hammer). See our website PDF for a complete
scan of the letter.
