Worldwide Thematic Collection – Aviation & Airmail, 1828–2014 (47 Exhibition Pages). An extensive and highly specialised worldwide thematic collection devoted to aviation and the development of airmail, presented on 47 exhibition pages and accompanied by a supplementary stockbook. Carefully written-up and structured as a study of mankind’s progress from myth to flight, the collection traces the evolution of “mail by air” over nearly two centuries. The principal exhibit comprises: 19 sunken die proofs, 36 colour proofs (including a notable quantity of Spain Los Desparates “Follies”), 2 signed artist’s essays (Albert Decaris’ unadopted colour design of Blaise Pascal, and preliminary sketch for the 1968 Jeanne d’Arc), a substantial range of aviation/airmail/flight stamps (notably including Italian Occupation of Ionian Islands 1945 Daedalus & Pegasus), 17 booklets, 19 covers/cards (including an 1840 1d. black Mulready with personal letter), 8 pieces. The thematic storyline follows the broad sweep of aeronautical history: Before Flight, Myths & Legends, Science, Literature and Art, First Powered Flight Attempts, Vertical Take-off, Hydroplanes, and the rise of Airmail services. In addition, a stockbook of supporting aviation material includes 5 photographic proofs (Argentina 1947 Aeronautical), a further 34 colour proofs, 132 stamps, and 2 miniature sheets. Coverage is worldwide, from the earliest experimental issues to modern commemoratives, and includes numerous scarce sets, predominately unused, with condition mostly fine throughout (modern material especially fine). This is far more than a topical assembly – it is a carefully constructed thematic exhibit, rich in proofs, essays and postal history, with a strong intellectual framework and many items of standalone philatelic importance. A collection that could be re-exhibited with distinction or readily broken down into highly desirable specialist lots. Ex. The ‘Izhak Barak’ Collection: The Development of Aviation and Transportation of Mail by Air until 1914.
