India, Bombay, 1843, "POSTAGE/Inward Bearing Ans/Outward do" Framed Rate Handstamp (Giles SR5). Clear and mostly complete strike on back of 1843 folded letter datelined "H.M.S. Cornwallis, Aug 23, Hong Kong", addressed to Thirsk, England, poor strike of red "Hong Kong Post Office" Royal Arms and red "INDIA" in oval handstamps, London (Dec. 5) transit and Thirsk (Dec. 6) arrival datestamps, fascinating contents regarding China including three sketches of a farmer plowing, two "Chinamen" and a Junk ship, cover with couple file folds, Fine and rare combination of postal markings, the "Bombay" marking has usually been attributed to Bombay but it is theorized it was applied in Hong Kong, while Giles states "3 examples recorded", there are believed to be between 16-20 examples all used in combination with the Hong Kong Royal Arms handstamp, similarly Webb mentions about 20 covers are known with the Hong Kong marking (p. 79) but that is more likely around 75-80, a useful and informational article on was done by Dr. A.M.T. Cheung in the Hong Kong Philatelic Society Journal (2001)

(7 June) in red as the arrival Customs c.d.s., denoting postage due as was the case for mail to Northern China, and bearing perf. 11 ½ 12 ca. pair with left sheet margin, cancelled by oval Tientsin seal in blue (dispatch customs c.d.s. applied upon supplementary franking), and additionally tied by CUSTOMS TIENTSIN double-ring d.s. OF CUSTOMS PEKING / June 8 92 c.d.s. in blue alongside, the message on the card contains acknowledgement of forwarding by the Empress of Japan vessel, a very fine and tremendously rare usage of outstanding appeal.
The card is an inter-Treaty Ports mail, but since it was sent to Northern China, making it required to be transferred to the Customs Post for onward transmission via Tientsin to Peking, and therefore an additional Chinese postage was imposed. From 20 March 1892, the domestic post card rate raised from 1 to 2 candarins, which was charged accordingly by franking with 2x1ca. Small Dragons.
This is one of the two to three surviving HK postal stationery cards for inbound delivery to China bearing Small Dragon stamps, and the earliest one for such usage.

Turkey to Peking, China – 1902 UPU Card via Danube Commission and Singapore Route 19 May 1902, TURQUIE Ottoman 20-para postal stationery card, posted from Constantinople Turkey to Peking, addressed to the Imperial German Legation in China. Front Side: (1) Pre-printed UPU indicium (20 para carmine) tied by Ottoman postmark (in Arabic script) dated 19 May 1902; (2) Transit marking “COMS. DE GALATZ. DEPART / 20 MAI 1902”, a rare circular date stamp of the Danube Commission, indicating dispatch via the international Danube mail exchange office at Galați (Romania); (3) Final arrival to two oval PEKING handstamps dated 28 June 1902. Reverse Side: “SINGAPORE TO-HONG-KONG / JU 14 / 02” Reconstructed Route: Constantinople (19 May 1902) → by rail or steamer to Galați (Galatz) → down the Danube River system via Danube Commission maritime corridor → Black Sea → Suez Canal → Straits Settlements (Singapore) → Hong Kong → Peking (arrival on 28 June) ✴️ A rare combination of: (1) Danube Commission route marking: “COMS. DE GALATZ. DEPART” — used for international river mail dispatches from Galați, a key river port under the jurisdiction of the European Commission of the Danube, established in 1856 to regulate international navigation and mail on the lower Danube; (2) Singapore to Hong Kong steamer transit, evidenced by a British marine sorter c.d.s., confirming the item took the southern maritime UPU route, not the Trans-Siberian land route. Reflects the complex interconnection between Ottoman, Danubian, and British colonial maritime networks, all operating under the UPU framework.

Ottoman Empire (Baghdad) to China – Early UPU Postcard to Tientsin via Suez and HK 14 August 1902, Ottoman-Bagdad picture postcard from Baghdad to Tientsin, North China; On the front side, affixed a 20-paras rose-red tughra issue at upper right, tied by a clearly legible BAGDAD / 14.8.02 Ottoman circular date stamp. The card was dispatched from Baghdad, then under the Ottoman Empire (modern-day IRAQ), and is addressed to Franz Primaw, Tientsin, North China. The postcard features a multi-leg routing reflective of the global mail networks of the time: transited PORT-SAÏD / 23.VIII.02, a key Suez Canal postal hub; arrived in East Asia with marine sorter “SINGAPORE.TO.HONG.KONG SP 21 02” d.s.; final delivery to Tientsin (3 OCT), a prominent foreign concession port in northern China. This item represents a rare and well-preserved example of Ottoman-Bagdad originated mail to Qing-dynasty China, exhibiting Ottoman postal stationery usage. Bagdad is the capital of today’s IRAQ that does not become independent Kingdom of IRAQ until 1932. Such mail from Baghdad to China in the early 1900s is highly uncommon, especially when accompanied by well-preserved postal markings and photographic content depicting local Middle Eastern life.
