Calcutta, India to The London Missionary Society, endorsed pr."Lady
Clifford" and noted insided that "as there will be no steamer going
to the Red Sea for a month or two, this is forwarded by the Cape
Route" land at Dublin and showing on face the very rare Dublin
mixed type face Ship Letter/from/INDIA in black, struck to denote
the lower rate of fourpence applicable to incoming India Letters,
Calcutta and London bs. Rated 4d India and 15d Dublin to London,
plus 2d London local rate paying a total of "1/9". An extremely
rare usage with only a hndful recorded. Provenance: Brian Wallas
and Robertson. Mounted on the original Robertson part page with his
notations

Mauritius addressed to Bordeaux, charged the 8d uniform shipletter
fee on landing in Queenstown, no additional postage was charged for
transit, showing samll snas serif QUEENSTOWN/SHIP LETTER in blue
(only in used between 1850 and 1853), with Queenstown cds also in
blue alongside, array of transit and arrival mkgs, plus 1852 (28.7)
entire from Cork via London to Norway, showing clear strike of the
blue oval Mitchell & Seymour, Ship Agents of Queenstown, an
attractive and scarce pair

Montevideo, Uruguay to London, landed on the west coast of Ireland
and bearing on the face a fine strike of the fancy scroll “SHIP
LETTER” handstamp of Limerick in red, with matching LIMERICK /
SE.11.1827 / 94 mileage circular datestamp, also in red, alongside.
Rated “3/2” (later amended to “3/8”) for a double rate letter —
comprising 6d Ship Letter, 14d mileage, and 2d packet charges,
doubled. Reverse with transit and London arrival backstamps. A
great rarity of maritime postal history, being the only recorded
example of the Limerick Scroll “Ship Letter” marking. Provenance:

London, rated '5' (d.) which has been deleted and replaced with
'11' (d.), manuscript "ship" top right and straight line 'CLONMELL'
below, reverse with straight-line 'COUNTRY' and arrival Bishop
mark. Small part of backflap missing, nevertheless a remarkable
item, believed to be the only recorded ship letter from Clonel
which was further upstream from Dungarvon. Ex T. Roberts (1989).

Stamps some perf imperfections and one affected by filing fold but a most unusual and very scarce usage. Back stamped MONTREAL DE 21 1855. SG62 on cover single cats £780. (Ref 108475)
