concessionary rate cover to Chesterfield endorsed "Stamps not
Obtainable" and "Pte. George Hyatt, N.S. Reg." (North Staffordshire
Regiment), counter-signed by Captain Marrowood at lower left,
struck with "WADI HALFA / CAMP" despatch cds (Aug 1) in black with
square "T" mark and Inland Branch "I.B./1d." charge marking in
black. Reverse with Cairo transit cds (Aug 9) and Chesterfield
arrival cds (Aug 17). Fine and scarce cover. Note: The North
Staffordshire Regiment were the only British Regiment involved in
this Campaign. The Dervishes were defeated by the end of September
1896.

Belgian arrivals. Situated in the far south of Sudan's Equatoria
Province, the area was abandoned in 1885 and was occupied by Uganda
from 1893.

Lancashire, endorsed from "Pte. Bigham, 2nd. Lancahire Fusiliers"
and "Army of Occupation, Egypt", cancelled by two strikes of
"ATBARA / S.P.S." cds's (Sept 9, 1898) in black. Reverse with Wadi
Halfa transit cds (Sept 11), Alexandria cds (Sept 16) and Bury
arrival (Sept 23). A fine cover mailed just a week after the
decisive Battle of Omdurman - sold together with a 1 pi. blue
Soudan stationery envelope used to England, neatly cancelled
"Omdurman" cds's (Feb 28, 1899).

Egypt Stationery 1879/97: Group of five postal stationery examples
used in Wadi Halfa, Sudan. Includes rare 20 p. light-brown postal
card sent 28 November 1898 by Colonel Ironside to the Editor of the
Royal Engineer Journal (has faults/damaged) to Chatham, Brompton
Barracks. Also, 1893 5 m. envelope to Egypt during the Mahdist
occupation period; a 2 m. green envelope used to Cairo; a 3 m.
violet-brown postal card sent also to Cairo and a 1897 1 p. gray
green letter sheet with "SOUDAN" overprint in Arabic and French
sent to Italy 27 April 1898. Has interesting content regarding a
battle which states "My regiment suffered very severely as we had
nearly half the casualties of the whole brigade. We have had an
awfully rough time of it." Additionally, comes with three 1897 5 m.
carmine envelopes overprinted "SOUDAN" (H&G B3) uprated with
various combinations of the 1898 Large Camel postage and also a
1898 1 m. brown used wrapper sent to Alexandria (H&G E1). Very
mixed condition but a scarce and interesting selection (9).
