PETER WILLIAMSON EDINBURGH 1d-POST - THE RARE SERPENTINE "NOT PAID"
MARK; 27 Apr. 1792 E sent locally within Edinburgh by Peter
Williamson’s ‘private’ Penny Post. It has the very scarce ‘Peter
Williamson’ serpentine “NOT PAID” mark that was introduced when the
circular Williamson “…NOT PAID” mark had finally worn out early in
Jan. 1790; it was only in use for the last two years of
Williamson’s independent post – from 28 May 1790 to 14 June 1793 –
so very few examples have been recorded. Williamson ran an
Edinburgh Coffee House from the 1760s; late in 1773, he had
introduced, entirely off his own bat, a local post within
Edinburgh. The Post Office tolerated it, and it was a great success
- until the P.O. took him over in July 1793. (Estimate 150 GBP)
