Frank Crown's online census of the Charleston provisional entires begins with "the envelopes were probably prepared from a wood cut die and printed by the typographic method in the upper right corner of envelopes of various colors. The Charleston Mercury announced the availability of the Charleston stamped envelopes in the 15 August 1861 issue…The design of the indicium is very similar to the design of the adhesive provisional. For this reason, the firm of Evans and Cogswell is believed to have printed both… More details on the printing can be found in Richard Calhoun's 2012 book on the Charleston
provisionals. Crown also wrote "There are several dangerous fakes of the 5¢ blue Charleston indicium."

Frank Crown's online census of the Charleston provisional entires begins with "the envelopes were probably prepared from a wood cut die and printed by the typographic method in the upper right corner of envelopes of various colors. The Charleston Mercury announced the availability of the Charleston stamped envelopes in the 15 August 1861 issue…The design of the indicium is very similar to the design of the adhesive provisional. For this reason, the firm of Evans and Cogswell is believed to have printed both… More details on the printing can be found in Richard Calhoun's 2012 book on the Charleston
provisionals. Crown also wrote "There are several dangerous fakes of the 5¢ blue Charleston indicium."
