CDV of Louisiana slave, who escaped from the cotton plantation owned by John and Bridget Lyons in St. Landry Parish, Louisiana, and who enlisted in the Union Army, showing his back brutally scarred by whippings, back with "C. Seaver Jun. Photographer, 27 Tremont Row, Boston" imprint and description of the photo headlined "The Peculiar Institution", also pencil "Carried with me while in the Army 1864" VERY FINE AND RARE CARTE-DE-VISITE OF GORDON OR "WHIPPED PETER", THE ESCAPED LOUISIANA SLAVE WHO ENLISTED IN THE UNION ARMY'S CORPS D'AFRIQUE, AND WHOSE BRUTALIZED BODY BECAME A DEFINING IMAGE OF THE CIVIL WAR. This image originally appeared in the July 4, 1863 edition of Harper's Weekly, showing a similar illustration as well as illustrations of "Gordon as he entered our lines" and "Gordon in his uniform as a U.S. Soldier". The issue also included information on Battle of Milliken's Bend — the first major battle involving black troops (Harper's article is not included but can be seen in Sale 1037, lot 2869). After enlisting Gordon fought at, among other places, the Siege of Port Hudson in May 1863, which was a major assault where African American soldiers played a leading role. Ex "Clovis".

(U10) with sender's directive "Mohican, Loando, Sept. 8th '60" and
"per Jno. Gilpin", entire cancelled by "8" handstamp struck twice
with matching "Boston Ms. Nov. 2, 1860" circular datestamp and
"SHIP" handstamp, minor wear, Very Fine and rare use, St. Paul de
Loando was the capital of the Portuguese colony of Angola and a
known area of activity for slave traders, the U.S.S. Mohican was
patrolling the waters for slave traders, the Mohican captured the
slave-carrying ship Erie, whose captain, Nathaniel Gordon, was
hanged in 1862, the first man condemned under an 1820 Federal law
declaring slave-trading a form of piracy

1858 letter directing the Secretary of State to authorize William
W. Preston to negotiate with the government of Spain concerning
commerce, claims of citizens and the cession of Cuba, Very Fine,
several attempts were made to purchase Cuba in the decades before
the Spanish-American War, this effort by Buchanan of course failed,
accompanied by historical information on the appointment of Preston
and his mission, ex Diamond

S.S. President, 1840-41. Specialized study collection of this early
Cunard steamship, which completed only four transatlantic crossings
before disappearing on the return trip from New York to Liverpool
in March 1841, comprising 13 covers including three from the maiden
outbound voyage, maiden return, second outbound (3), second return
(3, including one from New Orleans with 50c plus 50c Freight Money
charge), last outbound voyage, also incl. 10/29/1840 from Baltimore
intended for the President but refused because Freight Money charge
had not been paid, and a remarkable cover from Charleston S.C.
8/27/1840 with two large "25" handstamps (25c plus 25c Freight
Money) intended for President sailing but handstamped "Too Late" in
N.Y. and sent on the Blue Swallowtail Line's Roscoe, all Very Fine,
a fascinating study of mail carried by this historic (and
ill-fated) Cunarder, all carefully described on exhibit pages with
extensive detail regarding sailings and markings, the maiden voyage
covers are worth $300-400 each, the two prepaid Freight Money
covers $400-500 each, and the others $100-200 each — the
opportunity to acquire this significant collection in one lot is
priceless, ex Arthur White

Transoceanic Mails. Extensive and outstanding collection of
approximately 500 covers, strength in stampless including some
inbound to U.S. from various originations, we note a 1794 use from
England to Va., a use to Singapore, Algeria, several groups such as
forwarders, B.N.A. cross-boarder freight, group of 1861-66 Issue
including uses to Canada, France, England, Germany, few others,
range of frankings, some auxiliary markings such as "Insufficiently
Prepaid", some better frankings such as strip of three of No. 28,
some on pages with rates and routes explained, some faults, overall
selected by the owner for something unusual or for better strikes,
Very Fine, a valuable treasure trove of transoceanic mails

single-frame intact exhibit, generally two covers to a page
featuring the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia, includes
buildings, state exhibits, pavilions, hotels, official imprints and
some domestic and foreign mail, wonderful range of illustrated
designs, bearing Bank Note stamps or on postal entires, each page
with good descriptions and context, some faults but overall
extremely attractive with many elaborate covers including designs

Extensive collection in two binders, includes many covers and lots
of ephemera, with announcements, numerous elaborately engraved
lettersheets both used and unused, other engravings and
illustrations, tags, postcards, hotel advertisements, etc., the
stamped covers are mostly 3c Bank Notes (and some 1c) including
most illustrated with many elaborate designs, often both front and
back and some with additional advertising by Philadelphia
businesses, plus numerous corner cards, also Centennial entires and
we note one with an Exposition cancel, condition is mixed with
faults to be found on many covers or more of these would have been
made individual lots, overall a fascinating collection with great
depth, better appreciated by reviewing our website PDF

and also a heavy emphasis on ephemera, earliest is a notice
relating to an 1867 Horticultural Fair, 1c Bank Note on 1880 cover
with International Exhibition of Sheep, Wool and Wool Products
corner card, documents and illustrated covers for 1884
International Electrical Exhibition, but by far the largest part of
the collection is a huge group of covers and ephemera for the 1899
National Export Exposition, including an unused set of picture
envelopes with illustrated backs and patented envelope design, plus
used examples of those envelopes, lots of other illustrated covers
from the Exposition, overall an impressive hoard for the

covers including one with a delightful illustrated engraved cat
corner card (the Penguin loved pussy cats), couple Confederate
items, some old letters that no doubt were long separated from
covers he owned, one is on a nice illustrated lettersheet featuring
William Henry Harrison, a few classic covers, Black Jack cover from
New Orleans and another couple Black Jacks used as revenue stamps
alongside 1c 1860 on a document, couple old currency, etc.,
