Mary Todd Lincoln. Widow of assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, free frank "Mrs. Lincoln" on mourning cover addressed in her hand to Hon. Isaac Arnold in Chicago, some edge tears VERY FINE APPEARANCE. A DESIRABLE MARY TODD LINCOLN FREE FRANK SIGNED "MRS. LINCOLN". Likely sent when Mary was living in Chicago in 1866 or 1867. Most of her free franks are signed "Mary Lincoln". With 1969 Gordon Banks letter of authenticity.

Sarah Childress Polk. Widow of James K. Polk, free frank "Free Mrs. J. K. Polk" on mourning cover to Mr. B. B. French in Washington D.C., with intact waffle wax seal on back, missing top flap where slightly reduced VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY DESIRABLE FREE FRANK OF THE WIDOW SARAH POLK. ONLY THREE EXAMPLES ARE RECORDED, AND THIS IS THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE ON A MOURNING COVER. Sarah Polk, a staunch admirer and supporter of Dolley Madison in her later years, has the distinction of being the first First Lady to be photographed on the White House grounds. Although Sarah lived more than 40 years following her husband's death in 1849, she lived somewhat reclusively in Nashville and evidently franked a relatively small amount of mail. Her free frank is exceedingly rare, with only three reported examples.

Mary Todd Lincoln. Widow of assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, free frank "Mary Lincoln" on unsealed mourning cover addressed in her hand to Ellwood Johnson in Philadelphia, light strike of "Chicago Ill. Apr. 10" (ca. 1866) circular datestamp, some edgewear and toning VERY FINE. A RARE FREE FRANK OF MARY TODD LINCOLN, WIDOW OF SLAIN PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN, ON A BLACK-BORDERED MOURNING ENVELOPE. Mary Todd Lincoln was given free franking privileges starting Feb. 22, 1866. In May 1865, Mary Todd Lincoln and her sons, Robert and Tad, left Washington D.C. for Chicago, where they resided until leaving for Europe in 1868. Most mourning covers were sent at the prevailing first class rate, but if the enclosure was printed matter, it could be sent at the circular rate. There is no way to definitively state this held a printed enclosure, but the fact that it retains gum along the seal of the top flap speaks in its favor.

Anna Symmes Harrison. Widow of President William Henry Harrison, free frank "Free Anna Harrison" on Aug. 5, 1848 autograph letter addressed in her hand to J. Cleves Harrison, one of her grandsons, in Indianapolis, letter signed "A Harrison", "Cleve O. Aug. 19" manuscript postmark and matching "5", additional "Free Anna Harrison" below the franking signature (in our opinion, in another hand) and lengthy content with news of family (transcript accompanies), wear and minor splits along folds as well as front panel soiling, still Very Fine free frank and scarce, Anna Harrison (1775-1864) was the wife of President William Henry Harrison, in 1841 Anna was unable to accompany her husband for his inauguration, her daughter-in-law, Jane, served as First Lady until Anna's arrival, while Mrs. Harrison prepared for the journey she learned that her husband had died of pneumonia on April 4, 1841—Anna married William in 1795 and bore ten children, only one of whom outlived her—one of her other grandsons, Benjamin Harrison, became President in 1889
