without a penny, to make their "pile" and return in autumn laden
with dust, vain hope! The gold is these mines is in the quartz rock
mostly (I sent you & Father Whiting specimens of both kinds last
fall) which it requires time and capital to raise and crush before
ti can be made available, the quantity of gold bearing quartz here
is almost inexhaustible, its quality or richness has not fur want
of machines been fully tested. Most people say they "know it will
pay big" but they do not know as yet. I have prospected this rock
as much as anyone here and I do not know, but my faith is pretty
strong that it will pay if properly worked., Very Fine, this being
the earliest of five letters known from the Nebraska Territory
