single, ...mehr 1879: Banknote postage due, 5 cents brown strip of three and single, fresh colour, perforations fine, tied by pink hollow ring alongside arrival cds “BROOKLYN N.Y. APR 3 82” to the reverse of an envelope, endorsed “Ship Letter”, faint cachet “U.S.S. ALASKA” and opera glass “NEW YORK APR 3 DUE 20 CENTS”. Minor soiling. Eye-catching postage due use. Fine. Comes with an additional cover from the same correspondence, with a single 5 cents postage due to front and clearer ship cachet, sent March 17 1882. Some faults. Note: The USS Alaska was part of the American squadron observing the Chilean and Peruvian War. Mail carried outside the UPU mails by supply ship to New York where it was treated as “Ship Letter” and charged 5c, which was half the UPU charge.
