Overland via Southampton 1859 (July 14): Registered cover from
Braidwood, New South Wales to Locarno, Switzerland bearing 1854 New
South Wales Diadem 6 d. greyish-brown, imperforate; 1 s. pale red
and Registered 6 d. vermillion and prussian blue (two examples),
the first stamp with minor double impression, all with mixed
margins and crossed by horizontal crease at top and all cancelled
by rays numeral “36” obliterators. Prepaid 2 s. 6 d. comprising 1
s. 6 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter to Switzerland plus 1 s.
registration. Black “REGISTERED / BRAIDWOOD” handstamp at left
tying the 6d Diadem and London registered markings in red. Multiple
transit datestamps on the reverse to record the journey to
Switzerland. The cover refolded at top and other faults, but a
major rarity with two imperforate New South Wales Registration
stamps. Route - P&O Line: Departed Sydney 14 July 1859 per
“Northam” via Port Louis (7 Aug) to Suez (28 Aug); overland to
Alexandria; “Ceylon” (5 Sept) via Malta (9 Sept) to Southampton (18
Sept); by rail to London, by steamer to Calais (19 Sept); by rail
via Basel to Locarno, arriving 23 Sept 1859 (71 days). Note: The 6
d. Registration stamp prepaid the registration fees within the
Australian Colonies and to the United Kingdom. An additional 6 d.
registration fee was required from England to foreign destinations,
although this regulation was not strictly adhered to. Only five
imperforate registered covers with two New South Wales registration
stamps are recorded. All of them are faulty, one is a front, with
two recorded from Braidwood to Switzerland, both from this
correspondence

to Switzerland is very scarce, with the Swiss immigrants following
the Victorian gold rushes and not venturing north over the border.
A small portion of the backflap is missing and minor soiling
confined to reverse, otherwise fine and a very scarce destination

1864 per “Bombay” to Galle (15 Nov); “Simla” (17 Nov) to Suez (3
Dec); overland to Alexandria; “Euxine” (5 Dec) via Malta (8 Dec) to

16 Dec 1864 (55 days). Note: The temporary rates increase appears
to have only applied to mail to Great Britain. This envelope was
addressed to Switzerland, and routed via Marseilles which avoided
the British mail system and the potential postage due. However, it
was still grossly underpaid, and not identified by the postal

Dec) to Southampton (12 Jan 1858); by rail to London, by steamer to
Calais; by rail via Basel (14 Jan) to Locarno arriving 18 Jan 1858
(97 days). Note: All of the early registered covers from Victoria
to Switzerland were addressed to a few families near Locarno. These
were Swiss migrants arriving in Victoria from 1856 heading towards
the goldfields of Sandhurst and Hepburn. Some travelled further
afield to new gold strikes such as this cover from Yackandandah.
With the discovery of gold in 1852, it became a gold mining centre
known for it’s alluvial mining deposits. The Post Office at
Yackandandah opened on the 13 June 1856, the year before this cover
was posted. These registered covers to Switzerland were discovered
around 1925 and dispersed to the philatelic market in Paris. Many
of the covers are in poor condition and most of the stamps are
badly cut into. This collection contains the two finest covers from

Note: Gold deposits were discovered in the Bendigo district in the 1850s, bringing miners from many different countries to the region. Bendigo and sattelite towns such as Kangaroo Flat or Golden Square sprung up essentially as tent cities that gave way to more permanent structures over time. The post office at Kangaroo Flat was opened on 2 February 1857.

Victoria ...mehr Overland via Marseilles 1867 (April 28): Cover from Hepburn, Victoria to Locarno, Switzerland bearing 1865 Victoria Laureate 8 d. orange and 1 s. blue on blue paper, cancelled by barred numeral “25”, prepaying 1 s. 8 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter to Switzerland. Transit and arrival datestamps on obverse and reverse. Back flap missing and a small stain but with fine oval "Maggia" handstamp on reverse, a very fine and rare usage of the 8 d. value on cover - Geoff Kellow RDP in “The Stamps of Victoria” on page 172 states “Covers are of considerable rarity with only about six recorded…". Route - P&O Line: Departed Melbourne 28 April 1867 per “Avoca” to Galle (19 May); “Surat” (19 June) to Suez (5 June); overland to Alexandria; “Syria” (7 June) via Malta (10 June) to Marseilles (13 June); by rail from Marseilles to Locarno, arriving 16 June 1867 (52 days). d. ...mehr Australische Staaten, Victoria: 1867/73: Laureate 4 d. rosa und 6 d. blau, beide gez. 12 als korrektes 10 d. Porto für einen Schiffsbrief bis ¼ Unze auf Briefcouvert von Kangaroo Flat nach Locarno (TI), leicht und übergehend entw. mit Nummernstp. "126" mit rücks. Aufgabe-Datumstp. "KANGAROO FLAT / VICTORIA / NO 26 / 67. Befördert via Melbourne (26. Nov.) und Marsielle nach Locarno mit rücks. Ankunftsstp. vom 14. Januar. Der 4 d.-Wert oben aus dem Bogen geschnitten statt gerissen, dennch ein interessanter Goldgräberbrief in die Schweiz. Gi. 110c+111. Anmerkung: Nachdem in den 1850er Jahren im Distrikt Bendigo in Victoria Goldvorkommen entdeckt wurden, strömten Goldgräber aus der ganzen Welt in die Region. Bendigo und die umliegenden Sattelitenstädte wie Kangaroo Flat oder Golden Square wurden innert kürzester Zeit als Zeltstädte errichtet, die dann über die Jahre festerer Strukturen wichen. Das Postbüro in Kangaroo Flat wurde am 2. Februar 1857 eröffnet. Australian States, Victoria: 1867/73: Laureate 4 d. pink and 6 d. blue, both perf. 12, pre-paying the ¼ ounce ship letter rate on 1867 cover from Kangaroo Flat to Locarno, Switzerland, lightly tied by "126" barred numeral obliterators in black with "KANGAROO FLAT / VICTORIA / NO 26 / 67" despatch cds on reverse. Forwarded via Melbourne (Nov. 26) and Marseille to Locarno with arrival cds (Jan. 14) on reverse. The 4 d. value damaged by cutting rather than tearing from the sheet at top yet an interesting "gold rush" cover to Switzerland. Gi.: 110c+111. Note: Gold deposits were discovered in the Bendigo district in the 1850s, bringing miners from many different countries to the region. Bendigo and sattelite towns such as Kangaroo Flat or Golden Square sprung up essentially as tent cities that gave way to more permanent structures over time. The post office at Kangaroo Flat was opened on 2 February 1857.
