1840/64: Postal History & Postmark Accumulation. Group of twelve
covers and eleven off-cover items, forming a varied and often
well-struck assembly of line-engraved postal history, including
both inland and overseas destinations with single and mixed
frankings. Highlights include 1841 1 d. red on four covers,
comprising a fine London numeral “4” cancellation; single tied by
Maltese Cross with red PAID SHIP LETTER / LONDON alongside to
Guernsey (AU 16 1842 arrival on reverse); “Missent to Norwich”
cover with manuscript instruction and Maltese Cross; and Birmingham
to Lichfield with 1 d. tied by four clear strikes of the Maltese
Cross. Further items include 1844 1 d. red Cardiff to Paris;
irregular block of ten Bradford to Clitheroe; part wrapper bearing
two pairs of 1 d. reds tied by Irish numeral “126” (Drumnadrochit)
to London; reused affixed pair of 1841 2 d. blue; and three covers
(including one front) with combinations of line-engraved and
embossed 1 s. issues, including a pair and an attractive tri-colour
franking to Athens, Greece, as well as examples to New York and
Paris. Also two Valentine envelopes. Off-cover postmarks include
two margined 1 d. reds, one with distinctive Wotton-Under-Edge
cancellation and another with Mullingar Maltese Cross, together
with other useful strikes including an 1856 1 d. tied to piece by
Irish numeral “243” in green. Condition very mixed with faults as
to be expected in an accumulation of this nature, but a valuable
and interesting lot offering considerable scope for study, postmark
research or resale.
