Clarke" in manuscript to Taunton with Bishop Mark on reverse in black and rate deleted (Edward Clarke was a Commissioner for Excise from 1694-1700); 1764 entire letter from Portsmouth to care of the Postmaster in Buxton with fine circular "FREE" handstamp in red - the first year of use of any "Free" handstamp (Willcocks L765); 1793 entire from London to the Earl of Carnarvon in Newbury and readdressed to Portsmouth with two circular Free datestamps in red; 1802 entire with fine "♚/ FREE" datestamp; 1802 entire with framed "Above Privilege / Number" in red and "♚/ FREE" datestamp deleted*; 1814 entire from Stranorlar to London with "♚/ FREE" datestamp in red and Dublin mermaid transit in red; 1821 cover written on behalf of William Huskinsson (he was later the first person ever to be a Railway accident casualty), 1828 entire from East Grinstead endorsed "Colchester" but struck with rare "ABOVE / NUMBER" in black*; 1832 and 1836 entires to MP's, 1837 cover endorsed "W. Wilberforce" to Islington; 1839 entire to Minstead, Lyndhurst with content "I have been out with the Princess Victoria of Saxe Coburg and her sister, they neither of them speak any English"; and 1854 imprinted OHMS cover mailed to a Captain in Naples. A scarce and fine group. *Note: In the early days of the 19th Century the allowance for free mail for MP's, members of the House of Lords, Bishops etc. was as follows: To send up to 10 letters a day without charge; to receive up to 15 letters a day without charge. There were three Inspectors overseeing potential discrepancies.

Crimean War 1856 (Dec 26): Letter and OHMS envelope from the War
Department in Pall Mall to the nurse, Miss Emily Anderson stating
"Dear Madam, His Imperial Majesty, the Sultan (of the Ottoman
Empire), having been pleased to place at the disposal of Her
Majesty's Government a sum of money for the benefit of the Ladies
and Nurses who served in the British Hospitals on the Bosphorus and
in the Crimea....offering to each Lady entitled to participate in
this gift, a personal ornament commemorative of the service thus
rendered by her to the sick and wounded ....engaged in the late war
in the East..." with the cover showing manuscript "About the
Sultan's present". Sold together with a further 'thank you' letter
to Miss Emily Anderson written in 1859 from a Sergeant late of the
Scots Fusilier Guards stating "present in the shape of a couple of
chickens of my own rearing and sincerely hope you will do me the
favour of accepting same as a token of my gratitude for the
unrelenting kindness shown during my unwearied illness in Scutari
Hospital, where your willing hand was ready to assist...". An
extraordinary and unique group of great historical importance.

and on reverse with printed seal, octagonal "CORREOS GUATEMALA"
datestamp bottom left and in transit at London two 1873/80 1 s.
plate 11 both with wing margin applied and tied by '10' oval barred
obliterators, reverse with LONDON transit and fine "BRITISH POST
OFFICE / CONSTANTINOPLE" code A arrival (5 Feb 1880) cds's, both in
red. A fine cover from a rare origin to a rare destination.
