1878/89: Group of four covers with specialist rates. Comprising;
Jamaica 1870/83 6 penny mauve used on an envelope endorsed “With a
bookpacket” sent from Kingston to Ohio, USA, dated 23 May 1878
(rate in effect 1 April 1877 to 1 April 1879). Jamaica Official
1891, ½ penny green & 2 pence grey, both fine, tied to a “On Her
Majesty’s Service" envelope sent to Grand Turks, Turks Islands.
Barbados 1889, 1 penny pink stationery envelope updated with
18832/86, ½ penny green to Calcutta, India, sent at a printed
circular rate. Also, Grenada 1889 envelope with 1885, 2½ pence
ultramarine pair to Colombo, Ceylon, at the letter rate. Both
covers paying the India & Far East surcharge. Good to fine
selection illustrating changing rates across the British
Commonwealth.
1884: Stationery postal card 2 pence blue on cream, used with ...mehr
1884: Stationery postal card 2 pence blue on cream, used with cds
“TRINIDAD MR 6 84” with two additional strikes alongside, sent to
Adelaide, South Australia and struck with a two-line red
instructional handstamp upon arrival “POST CARDS TO THIS ADDRESS /
CANNOT BE FORWARDED”. Small closed tear at top, which doesn't
detract. Well preserved. Scarce. (H&G 5)Note: This card was not
valid to Australia, despite the wording on the card which indicates
“East”, since the Australian Colonies were not yet members of the
UPU. The rate would have needed to be 7½ pence. Reference: The
