Macao, 1876 (Nov 21): Envelope to Lisbon, showing superb strike of
Crowned Circle "♚ / PAGO / EM / MACAO" handstamp, "B / MACAO"
origin cds alongside, red framed "VIA DE / GIBRALTAR" handstamp and
handstruck '50' (reis) rate mark adjacent, LISBOA arrival (Jan 11)
backstamp. An outstanding cover of great beauty. Note: In this
period, all letters emanating in Macao had to be forwarded to Hong
Kong for franking there with Hong Kong stamps, except for letters
to Portugal and Colonies. The Crowned Circle "PAGO EM MACAO"
handstamp is known on covers after 1870, used by the Portuguese
postmaster to send letters via the British Post Office (see
