Overland via Marseilles 1859 (Aug 15): Cover from Sydney, New South
Wales to Offenbach, Grand Duchy of Hesse endorsed “Via Overland and
Southampton for Frankfurt a/m in Germany”, bearing 1854 New South
Wales Diadem 6 d. olive-grey, four close to large margins, just
touched at top right, lightly cancelled by the Sydney duplex and
prepaying 6 d. and underpaid 11 d. for a ¼ ounce ship letter of 1
s. 5 d. to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. Despite endorsement, the cover
was placed in the Marseilles mails for quicker delivery. “A.U.UEB
FRANKREICH” in black (not listed by Van Der Linden) applied by the
Thurn & Taxis Post in Frankfurt for transit through France. “16”
manuscript in blue scored through and re-rated “25” (kreuzer)
credit to France plus an additional “9” (kreuzer) for internal
German delivery totalling 34 kreuzer. “34” (kreuzer) manuscript in
blue plus an additional “1” (kreuzer) for local delivery to be paid
by the recipient. Multiple transit datestamps on the reverse, a
small part of the lower backflap missing, otherwise very fine.
Illustrated in "Maritime Connections to and from New South Wales"
by Paul Wijnants on page 83. Highly colourful and a destination
rarity from the Australian Colonies, being the only recorded cover
from New South Wales to the Grand Duchy of Hesse. Route - P&O

Sept) to Suez; overland to Alexandria; “Panther” (30 Sept) via
Malta (3 Oct) to Marseilles (6 Oct); by rail from Marseilles via
Paris and Frankfurt to Offenbach, arriving 8 Oct 1859 (55 days).
Note: The postal system of Hesse was privately operated by the

South ...mehr Overland via Marseilles 1860 (April 22): Cover from Sydney, New South Wales to Nordenhamm, Grand Duchy of Oldenburg endorsed “per Emeu in closed mail to France”, bearing 1860 New South Wales Diadem 6 d. grey-brown, perf. 12, pair, neatly cancelled by Sydney duplex and prepaying 1 s. and underpaid 8 d. for a ½ ounce ship letter of 1 s. 8 d. to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg. “F. 59” Franco-German Convention handstamp (Van der Linden fig. 1199) in black (tying the lower stamp) and “17” (silbergroschen) manuscript in blue to be paid on receipt. Fine and rare: the only recorded cover from the Australian Colonies to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg and the only recorded example of the “F.59” Convention handstamp on mail from New South Wales. Victoria ...mehr Overland via Marseilles 1857 (Oct 16): Cover from Cathcart, Victoria to Brunsbüttel, Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein bearing 1854 Victoria Octagonal 1 s. blue, imperforate, margins touched all round, 1857 Emblem 1 d. yellow-green with four margins and 4 d. dull rose, four large margins, neatly cancelled by barred numeral “93” and prepaying 1 s. 5 d. and underpaid 5½ d. for a ½ ounce ship letter of 1 s. 10½ d. to the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein. Postal markings include “15” (skilling) red manuscript credit to the Royal Danish PO in Hamburg scored through and rerated; “11¼” (silbergroschen) in red on the reverse, equivalent to 15 shillings and “52” (skilling) manuscript in red, including forwarding by Hamburg and internal postage to Brunsbüttel to be paid by the recipient. Multiple transit datestamps on the reverse confirm the journey. A destination rarity from the Australian Colonies in very fine condition. One of the earliest recorded covers from Victoria to the Duchy of Schleswig-Holstein. Overland via Marseilles 1857 (Dec 16): Internally illustrated
lettersheet depicting the goldfields at Castlemaine, used from
Melbourne, Victoria to the City State of Hamburg bearing 1854
Victoria Octagonal 1 s. blue imperforate, 1854 Woodblock 2 s. dull
greenish blue and 1857 Emblem 4 d. dull rose, each with margins in
places, cancelled by barred numeral “1” of Melbourne and prepaying
3 s. 4 d. for a double rate 1 ounce ship letter to Hamburg. "50"
(schillings) manuscript in red for forwarding to be paid upon
receipt. Transit datestamps on obverse and reverse record the
journey with a very fine strike of the Hamburg arrival datestamp
(Feb 4). An important historical lettersheet in very fine

Melbourne 16 Dec 1857 per “European” via Galle (9 Jan 1858) to Suez
(24 Jan); overland to Alexandria. Royal Mail Steam Packet Co:
“Tamar” (26 Jan) to Malta (29 Jan); "Vanguard” to Marseilles (1
Feb); by rail from Marseilles via Paris to Hamburg, arriving 4 Feb
1857 (49 days). Note: Unrecorded in "Pre-UPU Mail of Victoria" by
Ben Palmer and one of the earliest covers recorded to the City
State of Hamburg known. Note: This illustrated lettersheet depicts
the newly discovered gold mining town of Castlemaine. Gold was
discovered at Mount Alexander, near Castlemaine in July 1851 and by
the end of the year, there were 25,000 people at the diggings. The
lettersheet was illustrated by Nicholas Chevalier, with his
monogram at the lower left and published by A. T. Hodgson of
Castlemaine. It is interesting to note that besides a depiction of
the new gold town, in the foreground are two Chinese miners, one of
the earliest images of Chinese miners recorded in the Australian
Colonies. Chevalier was one of the most prominent colonial artists,
emigrating to Victoria in 1854. For the next 15 years he painted
throughout Victoria, before returning to London in 1869. Based in
London, he was a continual exhibitor at the Academy until his death
in 1902. This lettersheet is very rare, being the only recorded
example - it is not present in the State Library of Victoria and is
the only example known in this dual sheet format

Travelling Post Office via Marseilles" bearing 1858 Victoria 6 d. bright blue, a single example, two small spots at top and cancelled by barred numeral “1” in black and prepaying 6 d. and underpaid 11 d. for a ¼ ounce ship letter of 1 s. 5 d. to the Principality of Schaumberg-Lippe (Lower Saxony). “11¼” (silbergroschen) manuscript in blue recognising the under payment and the internal postage to be paid by the recipient. A fine and scarce cover to an unusual destination. Route - P&O Line: Departed Melbourne per “Salsette” 18 Feb 1860 via Port Louis (9 March) to Suez (25 March); overland to Alexandria; “Panther” (28 March) to Marseilles; by rail from Marseilles (3 April) via Paris to Bückeburg, arriving 6 April 1860 (72 days). Notes: This was the last voyage of the mail route via Port Louis, Mauritius. From late March 1860, the route was changed to via Galle, Ceylon. The postal system of the Principality of Schaumburg-Lippe was privately operated by the Thurn & Taxis Post

Victoria to Bützow, Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin bearing
1858 Victoria 6 d. bright blue, cancelled by barred numeral “1” in
black, prepaying 6 d. and underpaid 11 d. for a ¼ ounce ship letter
of 1 s. 5 d. to Mecklenburg-Schwerin. “17” (silbergroschen)
manuscript in blue scored through and converted to “27¼”
(schillings) manuscript in blue for forwarding from England to be
paid by the recipient. “F. 37” Franco-Prussian Convention handstamp
in black (Van der Linden fig. 1172) applied in error and re-rated
“F. 39” Franco-Prussian Convention handstamp (Van der Linden fig.
1174) in black. Missing side flaps, but a highly attractive and
colourful cover. Rare, there are five covers and a front recorded
in the Ben Palmer census to the Grand Duchy of
Mecklenburg-Schwerin, this being number 3. The only cover recorded
with the "F. 37" Convention handstamp and the only cover from the
Australian Colonies with two Franco-Prussian Convention handstamps.

shaft on route and the mails transferred, “Granada” (14 April) to
