South ...mehr Overland via Brindisi 1878 (July 6): Cover from Meranburn, New South Wales to Aalesund, Norway bearing 1871 New South Wales 2 d. prussian blue and 1876 2 d. pale blue in a horizontal pair, faults but showing double perfs. variety at base and at right, indistinctly cancelled by the rays numeral “729” of Meranburn, prepaid 6 d. and underpaid 3 d. for a 1⁄2 ounce ship letter to Norway. Multiple transit datestamps on the reverse and with Aalesund arrival on obverse. Lower flap missing on the reverse and the cover with minor imperfections but an enormously scarce destination with Norway being by far the rarest destination of the Nordic countries, this cover being one of the earliest covers recorded from the Australian Colonies to Norway. Route - P&O Line: Departed Sydney 6 July 1878 per “Avoca” to Melbourne; “Assam” (9 July) to Galle (28 July); “Tehran” (31 July) via Suez Canal (17 Aug) to Alexandria; “Pera” (20 Aug) to Brindisi; by rail from Brindisi (24 Aug) to London (27 Aug); by steamer via Oslo to Aalesund, arriving 11 Sept 1878 (67 days). Note: A full transcript of the letter is included with this lot. Meranburn is a small farming community about 50km. west of Orange. The writer, Ole Svendsen, has bought a small farm but has not heard from his family in Norway for two years. He writes: “I have had some bad luck since I got here, losing one of my best horses. In the last 3 years we had no rain and until now we had some but so little that nothing grows and half of the stock is dead since no water was available to drink. There is winter here at the moment. We have Christmas in the middle of summer and it is so hot that we hardly get out of the house.”
