1896 (March 25): Envelope registered from The Treasury, Eshowe to
London franked Overprinted ZULULAND 1888/93 on stamps of Great
Britain 2½ d. purple on blue in a horizontal strip of six neatly
tied by "ESHOWE / ZULULAND" double-ring datestamps, reverse with
"TREASURY / ZULULAND" double-oval rubber datestamp in violet and
KENSINGTON arrival (April 7) datestamp. Attractive and unusual.

1903 envelope (slightly reduced at right) to Norway bearing 1888-93 3d and 1s with Eshowe single-ring CDSs of 13 OC, paying 6 times the 2½d rate. Backstamped Durban, London and Kristiana. Official resealing labels applied at London, partially removed from the 3d value, affecting the surface; inconspicuous vertical fold. A very unusual cover, especially with the 1s value and to Norway. cancelled NKANDHLA MR 27 95. On the back of the cover are Durban MR
30 and Aylesbury AP 29 95 transit and arrival cancels. Minor faults
at the upper right corner slightly affect the corner stamp, but a
very scarce cover from this small Zululand village

1879 envelope to England endorsed at the top 'From Capt. Cramer, On
active service in Zululand. No stamps available'. The cover passed
through Port Dunford without stamps but on arrival in Durban a 6d
has been applied and cancelled 10/5/79. London and Ryde JU 13 79
cancels are on the back of the cover. Captain Cramer was present at
both Gingindlovu and Eshowe during the War. A very fine cover from
this conflict

On the reverse are Durban JA 17 and Watford FE 13 94 transit and arrival datestamps. The cover was overpaid by a ½d, but at that time there was a shortage of ½d stamps. The single ring ESHOWE canceller (Proud D4) is uncommon. It was only used from 31.5.93. to 2.5.94. On 27 June 1891 a proclamation in the Natal Government Gazette authorised the use of these stamps for postal purposes. A very scarce usage of these stamps. Fine
