BRITISH COMMONWEALTH LONG ISLAND 1916 (25 Jan) "On His Majesty's
Service" envelope addressed to the Government Secretary at "H.M.S.
Europa", at Mudros (Lt. Commander Lucach, later Sir Harry Luke),
franked with seven stamps including 1/2d, 1d, 2 1/2d (two different
colors), 4 1/2d, 6d and 1sh, canceled "Afon" 25.1.1916, fine and
scarce (contemplated issue for the Holy Community situated on Mount
Athos. In the winter of 1915-16, the Allies considered the
occupation of the Holy Mountain and in anticipation, prepared a set
of six stamps intended for issue on the 25th January, for use by
the governing body of the Monastic Republic. They were designed by
Lt.Cmdr Luke and printed in imperf. sheets of 12, by a photographic
process (similar to that used in Mafeking during the Boer War)
aboard the H.M.Aircraft Carrier "Ark Royal". The 1948 edition of
the Robson Lowe Encyclopedia raises two points of interest with
these stamps. They bore currencies of three different languages and
alphabets (English, Cyrillic and Greek) and were produced during
war on a naval vessel)

1916 (7 May) 1s black on thin horizontally laid, typewritten (carbon), unused BLOCK OF EIGHT (4x2) from plate 4, being the two top rows of a sheet of 20 (4x5) with full margins, showing plate number '4' at upper left, error 'ISLANA' on pos. 2, and variety 'One (two) semi-colons for colons in left frame' on pos. 1 and 5. Slight horizontal creasing (mainly along top framelines of second row) and indentation of a paperclip at top of pos. 1, still very fine and fresh. A unique positional multiple, including the only recorded example of the 'ISLANA' error as a black carbon, and the largest known block from plate 4 (any colour). Ex 'Mountrobeck' (CRL 1/6/94, lot 99). [Production of the 1s black comprised 96 top copies (one sheet each from plates 1-4 and a sheet of 16 from plate 5) and 168 carbons (apparently three sheets each from plates 3-5 only), but 62 remainders were destroyed, giving a total issue of 202. 80 unused carbons have been recorded including a sheet of 20, from plate 3 and two blocks of 8, of which this is one].
