1842 (May 18) Entire letter from London to New York paid 10d, underpaid by 1/- so returned with red boxed 'Returned for / (1/-) Postage', 'POSTED AFTER 7 O'CLOCK AT NIGHT' and 'Returned / for Postage'. All three marks upright and very clear, light file folds, a fine exhibition item

20 Rp. orange (kleine Fehler) und 3 Exemplare 10 Rp. rot mit Aufgabestempel GENEVE SUCC.RIVE 11 VIII70IX auf Umschlag mit vollem Inhalt über Basel mit rückseitigem Transitstempel und Leitstempel VIA FRANKREICH und AFFR.INSUF. über Queenstown, New York AUG 21 13 U.S.NOTES mit Taxe manquante 6 cent und weiter nach Napa in Kalifornien. Auf Grund des Kriegsverlaufs des Deutsch-Französischen Krieges leitete die Schweiz ihre Post vom 1.-18. August statt über Baden über Paris. Es wurde ein provisorischer Tarif von 80 Rp. statt 50 Rp. angewendet. Daher wurde der Brief in New York mit 13 c. belastet (6 c. + 5 c. Zuschlag und 2 c. Zuschlag depreciated notes). Ein seltener Brief. Im Spezialwerk "Transatlantik mail" von Winter abgebildet. Attest Eichele. Kat.-Nr. 33+38
