Description

Danville Va., 5c Red on Wove (21X1). Rectangular-cut margins which are large to just impinging on bottom ornament's point, tied by "Danville Va. Oct. 9" (1861) circular datestamp on buff cover to R. A. Sullivan at Richmond Va., sender's directive "care of E. H. Cunningham" and in a different hand "4th Regt Texas Volunteers Col. Hood" (John Bell Hood, later General of Gettysburg fame), slightly reduced at left and some edge faults, slight soiling VERY FINE STAMP TIED ON AN ATTRACTIVE COVER. ONLY FOUR DANVILLE POSTMASTER'S PROVISIONAL STAMPs ARE DEFINITELY ON THEIR ORIGINAL COVERs—OF THEse FOUR, ONLY THIS STAMP HAS RECTANGULAR-CUT MARGINS. one of the two FINEST OF THE DANVILLE PROVISIONAL STAMPS KNOWN ON COVER. THIS OUTSTANDING CONFEDERATE PROVISIONAL COVER GRACED THE COLLECTIONS FORMED BY CASPARY, LILLY, BOKER AND HAUB. The cover listed in the CWPS census as no. 010 is potentially an equal, by virtue of the stamp's large octagonal margins. The other two covers have stamps with margins cut close to shape. CWPS census no. DAN-VA-A01-009. Ex Caspary, Lilly, Boker and Haub ("Erivan"). With 2006 P.F. certificate. SCV $32,500.
